MG MG Y Type - Headlamp Sealing Rubbers

Whilst assembling my YA 8" headlamps recently I have had problems with the sealing rubbers.

The bowls and rims have been rechromed but the rims still fit onto the bowls albeit very snugly.

However when I fit the sealing rubbers I am unable to get the rims on.

I have three sets of rubbers, two new pairs from different sources and a good used pair but none of them fit.

Any ideas?

Can you post a picture? My Y has 7" headlamps and no sealingrubbers.

Willem I believe the very early y had an 8inch unit dipping reflector fitted, the later ones had 7""semisealed beam units

rob its more years than i want to remember since i worked on dipping reflector headlights but if i remember correctly the glass is held against the rim with W clips. the reflector and selinoid is held in a casing in which it can pivot THIS casing is normally held in the headlight shell by two means 1st by a screw at the top of the casing or 2nd by three projections round the front of the casing all you did in this case was to hold the reflector assemble against the shell and push the rim on. the gasket i think went between the reflector casing and the rim. i am positve the whole lot was not clamped together in the front of the rim as you are attemping to do

Hi John,

The early YAs were fitted with MBD140 8" headlamps similar to a TC but the YAs did not have solenoid operated dipping like the TC.

Both reflectors were plain and fitted with one or two twin filament bulbs (dependent upon where in the world they were intended for).

The glass lens is fitted to the rim with 'W' clips.

The rubber seal fits over the lip of the reflector and also over the lip of the shell, loosely holding the shell and reflector together.

The rim assembly and the shell assembly then need to be fitted together.....this is the part I am struggling with.

The 'fit' is very tight and there is very little metal (the rim) to push against. If you push against the glass it will chip and come out of the rim.

I am also concerned that if it ever goes on...I will have the same problem taking it off again.
