MG MG Y Type - Headlamp stone guard protectors

A long while ago I bought a pair of stoneguard proctectors for the Lucas S700 headlamps. They were made by a company called CUB of Liecestershire, England.

They have two thumb nuts on the outside and on the inside they have two round headed chrome plated screws. Are these supposed to catch on to the gap between the rim and the backshell does any one know?

There are quite a few stones on the road around here and I dont fancy looking for new headlamp glass!

Thanks

I bought a pair of these many years ago and never fitted them - they have 3 little flat lugs that are fixed (turned over)at one end to the stone guard and the other flat end is meant to be fixed to the rim with self tapping screws - as far as I am aware. I never fancied drilling the rim a -so never fitted them. If you use something to go under the rim it may not seat properly I imagine. I could probably send a digital photo if you e mail me but I could never really figure out the best way of fixing them. I have a few spare 7 in sealed beam units if you ever break one.

Paul, There are various types available- yours probably need drilling! It's worth having a look at www.vintagemotorspares.com accessories section. are they like item 703

Thank you Davids.

The style is not the 3 point mounting but is the one David pelham refers to (http://www.vintagemotorspares.com/phdi/p1.nsf/supppages/hodge?opendocument&part=9 and then scroll down to 703). I will ask Tim how to fit them, then report back here hopefully.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for replying. It looks as if you are right - drill the rims. I will have to think about this and may get a spare pair of rims I have chromed up as Tim has advised the following: "You need to drill 2 holes in the rim, fit the screws form inside then a locking nut on the outside to hold them in place. You can now refit the rims the stoneguard brackets fit on the studs with the knuled nuts".

That's why mine have been hanging around in my garage for 20 years - could not pluck up enough courage to drill holes in the rims for them....I always regret drilling holes in things - I did it recently to fit a wing mirror that the local kids can swipe at and yet returns to its original position - however I had to drill a 1 inch hole in my front wing and regret doing so as I could have fitted a removable door mirror. If anyone wants some stone guards.....
