MG MG Y Type - Hidem Binding

Hi guys,
I am looking to tidy up my YB and replace the Hidem Binding around the top of the car interior.
Can anybody advise me if this has been re-manufactured as I know some years ago I tried to obtain some , without success.
Many thanks. Keith.

Hi Anton.
I did previously look at their website, but cannot see it. Have you seen it on their list anywhere?

It used to be made by W Collingburn(?) in Yorkshire Keith. He was the ONLY supplier in the world to remake this wonderful piece of finishing trim. Sadly when he passed the business on to (his son?) the new owners decided to ditch all the old MG stuff ... including the details of how this was made as I contacted them with an offer to buy the details. Apparently it was all turned out into a big dumpster and hauled off. Their only interest now is in making kits for modern day minis and the like :(.

I may have some good old pieces in a bag in the shop somewhere, but I suggest first a VERY careful removal of the existing trim and hand washing it in a very light wool detergent with very light agitation.

Thanks Paul. Yes, I believe the Collingbourne business is very specific and limited on the trim they produce and as you say, all the old style MG trim was ditched.
Apart from my existing trim/lace being very fragile, it sits on a D shaped split rubber moulding which has badly deteriorated and now crumbling.
So I could really do with finding a replacement for the woven lace and a supply of the base rubber moulding.
Anybody else out there with any guidance.
The pics show the lace and my sketch of how it fixes.
Thanks Keith

Attached find pic of the Woolies stuff that I needed/used for my YT. Contrary to the black hidem sample, I ordered a legth of doeskin coloured material of the hard to find width of 13 mm = approx 1/2".
I really appreciated the samples they send of chromed screws, dished washers as well as colour samples of Duck, leather and plastic sheeting :o)

On an off chance: maybe "Metro Moulded Parts Inc" in Minneapolis can help.

Hi Anton,
I think we are talking at cross purposes here. The trim you have shown is that which fits around the door apertures- the trim I am looking for it that which fits around the inside top of the car between the headlining and the interior panels.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Is this what you need?

Hi Keith

I think the rubber moulding was available from Paul Beck and his part number was RM68. Just checked on his site but I cannot see it. I have used his Contact Us page to send him a message but if you want to call him his details are:

Please post back here if you call him. It may be that there is a minimum run length he needs.

The reply back from Paul Beck was not encouraging - see below:
Regret RM68 has now been discontinued without a suitable replacement.

I can have a look and see what I have if you are interested? Contact me off line.

Thanks

Thanks guys.
The 'hidem binding' that Woolies stock is the more common leather/vinyl binding, which I know is used on many vintage and early classic cars. The Binding that is correct for our Y Types is perhaps more of a luxury type of trimming, which helped to set MGs a cut above the rest. I have now found out that this binding was also used in the pre-war SVW saloon cars. I am beginning to wonder how many Ys have actually still got the original binding or has it all been replaced with the Woolies type stuff.

I am now considering the way forward which may entail a project to get both woven tape and backing rubber made up.
I wonder how many Y owners would want to fit the correct trimming?

Hi Keith

Have sent you details of the manufacturer of the extrusion. The original bobble lace as you correctly say sets the MG above other cars of the era and is just simply a thing of beauty to behold. Was it cheap from Collingburn to replace mine with theirs? Absolutely not, but was it worth it? Absolutely every single penny and I am so glad I did it!

Can somebody or a few people let me know if the colour of this woven "bobble lace" trim around the inside edge of the head-lining, matched the upholstery colour.
In my case the interior is beige and the trim is a beige colour.
What about the other trims on the YA and YBs?
Thanks
Keith

Keith D Herkes

It was only ever available (originally and latterly) in Beige Keith.

Paul
Paul Barrow

Great Paul. If that is the case then it makes the possibility of getting new lace a little less daunting as a range of colours would be uneconomical(as may even one colour).
I shall be talking to Mike Green at NTG in the week to see where his original stock came from.

Keith - You might also try to contact Chris Pick in Yorkshire (sorry I don’t have his contact details, but someone else might), as I recall he fitted bobble lace to his Y in about 2013. Hope it helps. John.
J P Hall

Hi John,
Thanks for the heads up. I've been in touch with Chris, but he fitted an alternative known as 'gimp-braid' - https://www.jamiltonupholstery.co.uk/plain-straight-gimp-braid-col-8100-gold?gclid=Cj0KCQjw4qvlBRDiARIsAHme6ovYIASZoC5Dt6u-DB8bOaHhf6ylgoXFzGlE4dnHeZyEUbiXLN-WVG0aAvJ2EALw_wcB
Which actually looks pretty good in situ.

Although this may be the eventual way to go, I would like to trace the original 'bobble-lace' as factory fitted.

I am in favor of the original pattern - looks simply beautiful and so glad I have this in my car.

Not making much progress at the moment.
Does anybody have any remnants of their original braiding and the rubber extrusion to which is was fitted.
It's so much easier when talking to potential suppliers if I can send them a sample.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks Keith

Yes I do Keith. I will look out a section and mail it to you. Can you please email me off line to confirm your preferred mailing address please?

Thanks

Come on you guys & gals in the UK.
Surely somebody has kept some oddments from when you restored your cars?

Paul Barrow, has as always volunteered his help, but to save him the trouble and cost of shipping to UK, it would be easier for a 'home' sample to be made available.
In anticipation.
Keith Herkes.

Ill put a piece in the mail for you Keith
