MG MG Y Type - High Level Brake Light

When I was at the Goodwood revival I noticed several of the Y types who attended had arther smart high level brake lights fitted. Can someone enlighten me as to where I can get one and point me to some fitting instructions. Many thanks!

I got mine from ebay - it works fine and is simple to install for either positive or negative earth. An example is:

though just put in 'high level brake light'

Marc, there were three of us at the Goodwood meeting on the Saturday and I believe we've all got the same high level brake light fitted. It's available from Staffordshire Vehicle Components (type this into Google)it's very discreet and has adjustable ends. The part number is 1257R. You may need to make up small brackets to raise its height. Wiring is simple, just drop the wires down under the blind shelf, through the boot and into the spare wheel locker where you can connect up to the brake light wiring.

OK - got the brake light but no instructions on fitting. Can anyone help? How do I add the wires for the light to the wiring for the brake lights? Any idea of what I could easily use as brackets for the brake light? Please bear in mind I have fairly limited technical ability...

How many wires does it have? What color are they?

If it is like the one I fitted here in the US, then you can also wire it into your turn signals, although I would guess in the UK a red turn signal would be confusing.

If it is a four wire one then two of the wires are for power, two are for ground.

If it is only two wire then you have 50% less guess work and it wont make much of a difference.

You can easily figure out on a 4-wire one anyway just by hooking up different wires to a car battery. Start by just attaching one lead (hold it on with a finger and touch the other terminal breifly with each of the other leads in turn. If it sparks at you that is not a good combination, if it does nothing, try the next lead and if it lights up then you have one of the power and ground lead sets sorted out. Then try the other pair and they should light up too. If the light you have is LED they are polarity sensitive so you may have to try all the leads on all of the terminals before you get a combo that works.

Assuming your car is positive earth still, and the light you got is also positve earth, then the lead(s) that went to the + terminal should be attached to a good ground on the chassis (I used a ring connector and hooked it to the chrome bumper bolt to the bumper irons) and the others need to be connected to the brake light feed. The easiest way (although I hate them) is by Scotch Grips, but I prefer to solder them into the push bullet.

Now, here is some good news! A mole in the MGCC Y Register (aka David Pelham) has sourced some rather nice connector blocks to go on the back of the Spare Wheel Compartment. Watch for an announcement on the News and Regalia page that these have been added. They make connection and disconnection ... a SNAP! [Sorry, pun intended ~ could not resist it!! :-)]

Note that these LED high-level lights are polarity conscious. So if like me you have a Positive earthed car take care that there are no outer metal bits on your new light, as they will be 'live'. LED lights currently only work one way with a Negative earth. If your light is all plastic you have no worries.
