MG MG Y Type - Historic Vehicle Concession

My local MOT inspector warned me that the DVLA are considering refusing further historic vehicle tax concessions. It could be that some are not in the spirit of the concession where very little remains of the original car, also may be in daily use. He advises that one should apply for a SORN on restoration projects asap.

Gee - is there no end to the penny pinching pernicious nature of Government!

One thing about the US system - such a proposed tax change (as this is a State level tax as opposed to a Federal one) is that it would at least have to be balloted in the State.

While this may have little to do with Y types there may be those who intend sending parcels or packages into Britain to friends or family from abroad. Goods above £135 are subject to import duty and over £40 charged VAT including the first £40. There is also a post office handling charge which could be more than the original shipping charge. On a package from the USA where the good were valued at $65 plus $13.16 air mail we paid £16.05 extra. It could be expedient to review the declared value of the goods. I think Britain must be Broke

The UK has a well deserved reputation for being "Rip-Off Britain" - I for one am glad not to have to be a part of it any more. I feel sorry for you guys, but each country must learn to live within its means ... and that does not mean milking the citizens dry!

Brian - that is horrendous! Admittedly over here we have what I believe to be a $200 limit that FedEx are rigourous in enforcing. When I bring stuff in and it is coming FedEx I try to ensure the orders are below that, not actually because of the Duty aspects but because FedEx automatically assume you want Duty Deferment and charge a phenomenal fee for that.

UPS and USPS seem to be thus far immune from this element but who knows for how long?

As Corry says - how much longer will government continue its largess (irrespective of part deviation) at the expense of the citizens. We at least have the TEA Party over here - Taxed Enough Already and it is well remembered what happened to the last "oppressive and onorous" oppressor ... every July 4!

I am well aware that this is not a political billboard but as Paul says 'at least we have the TEA Party over here'.

Reported in the UK (though probably not the Daily Mail!) as a bunch of extremists who appear not to understand how a country is run and needs to pay its bills and why basic healthcare for its cizizens should be provided in a civilised country. My god if they were in the UK they would ruin the NHS even more than Cameron is trying to do!

Rant over - sadly rainng in Warwickshire after some fantastic weather made travelling hood down great fun.

All the best Y Typers

Sincerely

The irony or is it paradox may be lost on those unaware of the prevailing $ - £ exchange rate, but on the day VAT was levied on our package it was 1.615 which made $65 a few pence more than £40. However on the day of delivery it was 1.63 so $65 was less than £40, a clear cut case of 'jobs worth' This term is famous in Britain for such incidents as parking in an unrestricted zone where the bumper may overhang a double yellow line by a couple of inches. The traffic warden will say while writing out the parking fine "its more than my jobs worth to let you off". Please don't laugh! Bryan
