MG MG Y Type - Hood Height

Does anyone know the measurement from the ground to the top of the radiator cap on a YB? I'm out of town or I would measure my own car.
Steve Simmons

Can't help you, mine is a YA which should be slightly higher and I'm at work.

But related to the topic is the following.

My radiator-assembly was fitted much too high because of thick rubbers between the bottom of the radiator and the front crossmember.
This high position caused the hood/bonnet to be tilted up on the front, causing very large gaps at the bottom on the bulkheadside and the bottom corners on the front to overlap the chrome of the grillsurround.
As a result of the lower fitting of the radiator I had to shorten the radiator steadybars by quite a few turns, so it had been "wrong" for some time.

As expected it resulted in a much better fitting hood/bonnet. On hindsight very logical but I had been looking at bending the bonnetpanels to achieve better gaps, I'm glad I didn't!

Now this will be an interesting exercise - besides seeing who logs on while at work that is!

The YA is 39 1/2 inches (100.33cm), oh and for the hell of it I am at home just about to have breakfast - it is 7:32am here!

Mean to add, I dont recall that the YT or YB should be different, the YB only had an anti-roll bar fitted, not shorter front springs.

The YT had 8 leaf springs at the rear to compensate for the loss of strength from the roof (YA/B only had 7) but it too had the same front springs.

This is my understanding anyway. Lets see if the results bear this out. I cannot give any YT measurements as my YTs both have the radiator off and engine out currently, one is in the UK and the other here!

Steve - Luckily I read your enquiry fully otherwise I would have gone to the garage and measured the height of the hood ie the canvas top of our YT. You really wanted the height of the bonnet didn't you!!! We do speak the same language don't we?!

Hope you get the right answer.

I forgot which BBS I was on! Perhaps I should have said "Grill height". ;)

The reason for my enquiry is that I'm planning out the size and specifications for a hydraulic car lift and I need to figure out exactly how high I can get my largest car, which is the YB. But not only am I out of town for a while but my YB isn't even at home, it's being stored at a relative's house while I finish construction on my garage.

Here's what I have so far on the height issue:

For those outside the continental US Steve really means the grille height and not how far off the ground your barbie (no, not the doll either!!) is.

Hey Steve - just looked at your drawing. Is this a new place to store the mother in law, or will you let your passengers out before you hoist them aloft!!

Have a great day!

Steve
Admit it.
You only posted this to rub in how much wealthier the Y owner is on your side than in the UK.
I dream about digging a pit in my garage, but your system looks as if it will let you work under the car in comfort as well as double park.
Michael Nicholson

Wealthy? I wish!!! If I were wealthy I wouldn't be scraping up a couple thousand dollars for a lift. I would be buying a bigger garage! Something in the range of 7 or 8 car stalls would be nice. :) As it is, I only have about 18 x 19 feet.
Steve Simmons

Paul, everyone laughs when they see me working on my schematics because of the drawing. I scanned it from the workshop manual so I could get the exact shape and ratios correct. I scaled it by the height and length of the actual car. It seems reasonably accurate but the most important measurement is the grill height as you can see from the diagram. It will dictate how far forward (left) towards the big door I can move the lift. That will in turn dictate how much (or how little) workspace I will have available. behind the cars.
Steve Simmons

Hope you remember to get the little guy out first!

I knew this one would generate some laughs.

You know they make lifts that go underground so you don't have to move the bottom car out of the way. Just push a button and one car goes underground while the other comes down to ground level. Really neat stuff but extremely expensive! Also, you can't use them if you have a flooding problem!
