MG MG Y Type - Ignition Warning Light - help

Hi,

Have all of my YA electrics fully functional now, however just one problem....

ignition warning light does not go out when engine is running....

Fan belt is as tight as I want to take it bearing in mind what the Service Manual says about over tightening the belt and causing 'rapid wear'.

And ideas please....

Regulator points are stuck together

The problem is either the regulator or the dynamo and you can do tests on these to find why ignition light staying on .
If it is the regulator then best to replace as if contacts are sticking then this will probably happen again .Regulator only cost about £25 and handy to replace .

Chances are that if the dynamo has been left unused it has lost its residual magnetism. Clip a wire from the battery terminal and touch the other end to the SMALL terminal on the dynamo, it will spark but it should re-charge the residual magnetic field on the field winding.

Yes - check the control on the regulator or better get a competent Auto-electrician to do it for you (if you arent sure, dont mess with these units as you can easily cause a car fire!).

Also follow Bryan M's suggestion for resetting the magnetism and also check and ensure that your polarity is correct by 'flashing' the dynamo per Hints and Tips too.

Thanks for your input guys....though I would give you a bit of feedback.

The reason the ignition warning lamp would not go out is because I had fitted a 12v bulb rather than the correct 2.5v bulb....schoolboy error....but all working fine now.

I also realised that the ammeter was not showing a positive charge when I revved the engine...so I cleaned the points in the control box and, hey presto, I now have a fully functioning charging system.

I had already 'flashed' the dynamo'.

Thanks again folks
