MG MG Y Type - Indicator switch

I have cleaned the switch gears all is running free, the spring is OK but I think there may be a part missing? The bar that is pushed by the spring has no Cam or linkage to raise it? If I lift it by hand the switch works. Is there something missing?

Geoff, how about a piccy of what you have, so we can compare with the fully operational version? I have good photos of my deconstructed/ rebuilt items. John.

You will find all you need to know on the International MG Y-Type Register website under Technical Centre - Hints & Tips - https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/hints&tips.shtml#Trafficator_switch_overhaul

Yes I should have said that first, since that was my first and best reference point - plus a new spring from Tony.

I can see that this switch is different to the one featured in the technical section photos. But as you can see the cam is missing so there is no drive from the main spindle to the spring loaded bar which operates the timer and the return of the switch. the reverse of this switch is also different with
a U shaped contact strip pushed L or R by a central cam.( this photo was deemed to large to be sent?)
If you think I am correct any chance of a photo with one dimension and I may be able to make a copy from I guess 16g steel sheet. Gentlemen, Many thanks for your help, cheers, Geoff

Mick Bath's excellent article in the IMGYTR tech section is no doubt what you've looked at. I wonder what happened to your missing cam - you'd pretty much have to have dismantled the clockwork assembly to get it out if it had been broken - and to instal another one. The little cogs go back in in a logical stepped order - here's a shot of the two I had fun stripping on the dining table. Sorry, it seems to come out upside-down. The one on the left looks like yours; your main spring appears to be bent, but that may not affect the function. Let's hope there are YTypers nearer you who have ferreted away a spare cam, or that you'll be able to copy one. John.

Contact Paul (IMGYTR Webmaster) before pulling apart as he can refurbish these Indicator systems and has a source for some parts for them.
Stuart Duncan

Quite so, Stuart, but I wanted to have a go, and had the benefit of a spare if I stuffed it up. As it turned out, the assembly comes apart easily albeit with care, and goes back together logically. I ended up with both mechanisms disassembled, cleaned and put back together. Trust me, if I as an old fiddler with no particular skill can do it, anyone can! On the other hand, there's a mate of Paul's ... and that's a great resource. John.

I assume that the cam has two lobes, one for Left turn the other for Right turn. As I have flashing indicators fitted I will reassemble the existing switch and look out for a doner part or a drawing so I can make one. Many thanks, cheers, Geoff
Geoff May

Geoff, if you don't have any luck locally, I'll do a partial strip of my spare and send you the cam for copying. John.
J P Hall

Thanks for the offer John, I' m new to the club I' sure someone locally will be able to help if not I will take up your offer, not sure if an upside down one will fit? cheers, Geoff

Well the bloody photo leaves here right way up but still turns up base over apex on the BBS, so goodness knows! John.
