MG MG Y Type - Introducing YA 1932

Finally I have YA1932 at Kimbers Kavern after reposing for approx 35 years in the carport . I now have the space , still short of time , but nevertheless motivation to get it up to registered and running .
It has suffered lack of love and as a result externally the paint work has suffered so the need to take back to metal with the front guards and patch some other lesser areas elsewhere on body.
This car was upgraded mechanically with the inspiration from a former BMC dealer of the name Lindsay Head. Lindsay’s MO was as per MG - Safety Fast, the need to handle well and braking before Speed.
As a result this car sports MGB motor ( his preference was always a lighter 1500 cc motor) full drive chain and front discs..
So, some cosmetic work first then assessment for registration..
I know some may disapprove of “upgrades” but hopefully will be more tractable in todays traffic and touring.

Thanks for sharing this,
Nice project, I'd be very interested to see a pic or two of what you've done with the steering shaft etc near the starter/distributor. having done similar I ran into a major clearance issue there---ok now, but it was a bit head scratchy there for a bit-

Col (?), was it Frank Head involved with Nepean Motors outside Melbourne years ago? We didn't move to Melbourne til 83, but I seem to remember the name. I think he (might be Frank) might have owned and upgraded a Y himself, as well as other interesting vehicles. Funnily enough his son is a mate of mine up here in Atherton. Enjoy the project, and swap notes any time. John.

Hi Willy, what did you do to sort the clearance issue?

With some careful mocking up of engine mountings and a very short, slim hi-torque starter I have around 10mm clearance either side of the Range Rover steering column. If that doesn't work out in use, the next step would be Megajolt distributor-less ignition.

Hi. Willy
Lindsay of HEAD motors did a number of Y type specials which I may be able to include photos of another time. One a lowered two door special ,and another a Wolseley 6 cylinder special sedan, wolf in clothing!
He ,Lindsay GOD bless his soul created a clearance around the distributor using two universal joints to correct the alignment , so there no. Indicator or horn switch as per original.
Will take a photo next weekend at Kimbers Kastle.
Photo , another rescued from the rust bug.

Sounds like a similar approach to what I ended up with-
Went with a small bodied starter motor and 2 universals using a R/Rover intermediate shaft, -it is close to the dist. but I've gone for some different heavy engine mounts to keep things from moving as well--If it fails then yep an EDIS ignition is waiting, but I'd really like to stick to a distributor for some weird reason on this car, it's most likely the last MG I'll do so probably just for the satisfaction of beating it into submission
Cheers

A recent paint of CC’s depiction of the Melbourne 75th celebration.
Pic includes interest in the banjo and the nice paint job of his 6cyl Wolseley powered Y , still searching to claim again.
Both cars are Y types, improved by The late Lindsay head, the green one with a Wolseley 6 , lengthened bonnet , lowered body , cut down radiator etc etc. whereabouts of both currently unknown.
Paint job on Sedan as per MG SA
I have another pic with the Master included, but need to reduce intensity.
What fun .

Hi Willy
Remembered to take some pics today of the steering shaft with the double jointed universals clearing the started motor , distributor and oil canister. There is approx a centimeter gap .and the front mounts are very solid.
Rear universal stabilised to the staunchon. Recall this work was done by the inimitable Lindsay Head, now long gone.
Having taken the front guards off to improve and repaint, it didn’t stop there. Then the valances 3 , came off to also repaint, no cussing .
So it was all pretty dirty and dusty , rusty etc , ( given this car was sitting a long time unloved).so today removed the lower suspension as the rubber bushes were looking bad and ordered the nalothanes. Stripped and primed the separated suspension pieces and painted the springs. It has to look nice or else I can’t sleep.
So what started as a guard repaint of rough spots somehow grew , but is the way it goes.
Finally this car is going to be on the road , with some electrics update and tying down the seats.
Am now thinking before putting back together to add some telescopic shocks , what fun. Must review what R Prior did up front.
Will report after more progress.
Clive
