MG MG Y Type - Is YMG 124 still there?

Folks, on a trip to England during April, I was able to ask my cousin to recall the rego number for her father's YA (I think)which so impressed me as a young lad in 1965, that it started my nearly 50-year love of things MG.The dark green Y lived in Dovercourt, near Harwich (Essex) and was registered YMG 124. Would anyone know whether the car is still alive, with or without the original rego number? I would love to engage with the current owner if possible. Thanks all - John.

There is no record of YMG 124 on the DVLA database so it is very unlikely it has survived. it might be worth contacting the webmaster or John Lawson to see if they ever had details of it at anytime and if it was scrapped. If it was re-registered you would need to know the chassis number to find out if it is still known. If you have a photo of the car how about posting a copy on this site.

Thanks Dave - good idea; I have asked cousin Ann for any photos she might have, and I'll try the Webmaster. What a shame if the old girl has been lost. John.

Being a YMG registration it is likely the car would have been a YB as University Motors used UMG and latterly YMG registrations for many of the YA, TD and YB cars sold by them.
I recall a copy of a letter published in 'The Autocar' [from University Motors] in about 1951 or 52 explaining how they used these registrations. I think I sent the webmaster a copy of the letter so it may already be on this site.

Just looked through some old documents.
YMG 124 was a YB .... chassis number YB1204 and was known to John Lawson. I will send you a copy by e mail. There is no record of this YB chassis number on Y's on parade.

Hi Guys

Surprised you didnt use the on-line data base - you could have located it there.

Sometimes the UK DVLA (Driver Vehicle Licencing Centre - UK National HQ) data is not as accurate as you would imagine it ought to be. I have sometimes found stuff under Make = MGY, MG YA, and MGYA permutations. Remember, it was mainly created by civil servants who rearlyy didnt care much when trying to decifer hand written records! If the owners have never reported the inaccuracies they will have gone unchallenged and unchanged.

Another reason cars will not show up on the DVLA site is if they were off road before the UK introduced SORN (required reporting of Statutory Off Road Notification ... and this does not include using them for cross country use - LOL), then the DVLA record will be silent as to their current tax status. Equally if it has been exported and not notified.

So, always check the on-line database. I will not disclose the current owner there, but you can always email me and I will pass on your detail to the owner and it is up to them then as to whether they contact you or not.

Happy MG Ying

Nice one Paul - I just checked on Ys on Parade and assumed as it was not there or on DVLA it did not survive - glad to hear it does!

Paul - sorry, not sure I know what "on-line data base" you mean. I'm very encouraged to hear that the car that "started it all" for me might still be cherished. Also, while she doesn't know it yet, I'm keen to get a photo for my English cousin, as this was her late father's only transport for many years. Regards, John.

If you look on the Welcome page of www.mgytypes.org below the preamble and introduction, there is a link there to our on-line database.

I am interested in the explanatory letter from University Motors regarding the UMG/YMG registrations, as I have a YB with a UMG registration. Paul says that he has no knowledge of it. If you still have it Dave, I would like to see a copy.

if you e mail me will dig it out - it was a letter from University Motors to The Autocar around 1951-2

For the record, Paul's advice led to the last known owner being placed in Devon, but apparently the car was sold sometime after 2003, to person and location unknown. However Jack Murray is attempting to put me in touch with the last known owner; so thanks to Jack and to Paul and David for all help. I still hope to track down a photo of YMG 124 so that it can take its place on the poolroom wall!

Sorry for the delay, but for those who like a "good ending", I had an excellent response from the last known owner of YMG 124, Stuart Mattin from Devon; he sold the car in 2006 and has given me the last known contact details for the purchaser. Stuart also sent me several fine photos of the car, which he remembered fondly. That for me is a great result - even though someone before Stuart had painted the car black. Again, thanks to all on this thread whose suggestions proved fruitful. You will understand how much it means to me to be able to frame and mount a photo of the very car I rode in as a child almost 50 years ago. Regards, John.
