MG MG Y Type - Layshaft gear cluster

I am rebuilding a gearbox for my YB out of the best parts of two gearboxes I have. However, the small teeth on the layshaft end of both layshaft gear clusters are badly worn and pitted. The only place I can find a commercial replacement is NTG, where they are £434.00 plus vat! Is there anywhere else I could find the part and if not would it be too bad to use the best of the two?

Maybe this helps?

Why is rebuilding a Y gearbox so expensive - its a very simple unit and similar to Morris 10 gearbox I think. I just don't get it - modern gearboxes are horrendously complicated by comparison.

Thanks Willem, I'm watching that gearbox. No guarantee it's any better than what I've got though.
I agree about the cost Dave; there's not a lot in the gearbox. You could rebuild an XPAG for the price of one gear cluster; trouble is the engine doesn't work nearly as well without a gearbox.

No wonder so many people are converting to a Ford Sierra conversion kit (not that that's cheap either but I am still waiting for a reason why the bits and pieces are so expensive - are they so difficult to remake?. How useful is a Morris 10 gearbox?
David Mullen

Peter,
You can use a cluster gear as long all the teeth are there and just pitted. The first/reverse gear condition is not as important as the others due to the short time it is engaged. Use of Molykote M gear Oil Additive, or Molykote Longterm 00 gear grease, both of which contain MoS2 will help a lot. The Molybdenum DiSulphide, MoS2, will heal the pitted gear tooth faces and make things run more smoothly, more quietly and cooler.

This is in part the reason I recently changed to a Sierra box. I had my gearbox rebuilt twice over a period of 20 years. The second time with new laygear and many other parts. Total for parts about $1,400. Cost of labour about $2400. After about 10 years and maybe 15,000 miles same problem slipping out of gear.
My mechanic offered two possible explanations; a) there was a missalignment in the gear box case resulting in premature gear wear b) the gears were of poor quality.(maybe a combination of both).
It is the same box as a TD and there was a thread on the TD BBS a few years ago commenting on the lack of quality of new gears. Search under Mick Conde who made some new laygears of excellent quality.
I came to the conclusion that the Sierra box was the answer and not that much more expensive if any. Still have some teething problems with the Sierra box which will hopefully soon be sorted out. But I can attest that 60-65 mph at 3700 + revs is a delight. Terry

Just a point on Morry 10 gearboxes. You cannot use the M10 Laygear unless you use all the gears. The ratios are the same but different number of teeth. What is an option if you know a good engineering shop who is interested in odd jobs is use a Wolseley 4/44 laygear but it has to shortened or cut and shut. The gears are correct but it is just too long!!!!

I still don't understand why it is SO expensive to restore such a simple gearbox - most probably my ignorance of these matters and I presume its been looked into but is there any hope on the horizon for the monetarily challenged.

Time or do it yoursef if you have the facilities and expertise. Terry
