MG MG Y Type - LED bulbs / Halogen headlights

Im sure I've seen a thread on these but can't find it. As am now doing more rallying with UHK 111 I thought LED rear lights and halogen headlights might be good. Are they available for the YB? Sorry if this is old ground to many of you. Marc

If you go to the MG Y Type Shopping Mall button on www.mgytypes.org you can link through to Terry's product. Excellent lights!

For the headlamps - check out the Links Page as there is a vendor there, I think! If not, I can put you in touch with one!

Unless you insist on having halogen Lucas units, you can go into any carpartshop and order some H4 7" units.
A friend of mine bought some for his SAAB and it cost him € 10,- apiece! They were Czech made, nicely curved (so not flat like a Hella f.i.) and would have looked the part on the Y.

Sorry Marc - thought I had one there.

Never mind - http://www.moss-europe.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=4490 item 44 SKU# GLB2983 is BULB, P45T, halogen, clear and they are listed at £7.97 each.

Hi Mark
My YT had halogens fitted when I aquired it, one burnt out recently and I had quite a job to find a replacement. I eventually found them http://www.classic-car-accessories.co.uk part No CLB 60 £3.65 you will also need the adapter part N CLS 1041 £2 99 or CLS1042 £3.45. Much brighter but will stretch your dynamo to its limits.

Halogen bulbs/lights are significantly brighter than the older incandescent lamps for the SAME wattage (current). It is only if you use higher wattage bulbs that you might need to worry about the load on the dynamo.

At the risk of getting into something I don’t know a lot about. - My comment was based on my experience some time back of having a new control box fitted. The Auto electric engineer who did the job said with words to the effect, that he had set the control box as high as he dared to cope with the load from my non standard headlamp bulbs.

Hi Peter and Larry,

One for the anoraks: in a way you are both right.

Peter is right because originally the bulbs would have been 42/36W (Lucas no. 354) for the RHD pre-focus headlamps and 36/36W (Lucas no. 301) for LHD for the YB. The YA used 36/36 bulbs throughout but in many forms. Source: page N9 in any Y maintenance manual.

Larry is right because most of the pre-focus lamps have been replaced with more modern 7" units like the Lucas 700 and in those units 45/40W bulbs are used. The halogen bulbs are 45/40W, too.

Both "modern" bulbs need the controlbox set to the maximum? And switched with a relay.
