MG MG Y Type - LED Lamps

I just installed a set of LED tail lamp innards on my TC. They greatly exceeded my highest expectations! The Y will be getting a set in the future as well.

The brightness and visibility of the "low" intensity (running lights) is already 3 times brighter than my brake lights were with bulbs. And the brake light brightness is at least double that! I feel a lot safer now knowing that not only can my brake lights be seen from a mile away, but they can be seen as well as any modern car during daylight hours.

I purchased the kit from Skip Kelsey at Shadetree Motors. Easy to install and well made right here in California.

Hi Szeve

Thank you for the great input. This is something I have been looking for, for a long time. Do you think it would also fit my two kids TDs?

Best regards

The kit is designed to fit the split D lamps but I see no reason why it would not fit any D lamp. As far as I know they are identical inside.

Installing the kit requires drilling two small holes in the backplate of your D-lamp housing. This is where the two securing screws will go to hold the unit in place. I found I had to drill two slightly larger holes on the bracket behind, which holds the lamps, to prevent the lamp from sitting on the new screw heads. You could instead use spacers to move the lamp away from the bracket.

When you order, you must specify positive or negative ground. The kit will only do one or the other, not both.

I am out of town until next week but I would be happy to provide photos of the new lamps upon my return, if requested.

Thank you Steve for the information. Yes, I would appreciate pictures, since the TD's rearlights are different from the Y's or TC's (much smaller with a square base).
Actually there is no rush, because my YT will not be finished befor another one or two years. The TD application could be a nice Christmas present for my offs-springs .....

Keep well

Oh, I forgot that the TD uses those small lamps. I was thinking they used D-Lamps. I'll see what I can find for you.

Source for this kit in Continental Europe ?

I also have the LED conversion fitted to my TC. It is an amazing 1000% improvement. I don't think I can use them on my YT as it is an EXU and the D lamps also serve as useless reverse lamps so have the clear lense with the small strip painted red as a running lamp. But on those lamps I use halogen bulbs from Anthony Pearson in Australia. They are almost as bright but draw lots of amps, while the LED lamps draw nothing. Also use the halogen on the Lucas 482 brake and turn signal lights, makes a big difference to visabilty.
I think I saw somewhere on the web that someone is selling
LED lamps that replace the bulbs that would fit the likes of the Lucas 482 or the type used on the TD. Can't find it at the moment. If so they would be great otherwise contact Pearson for Halogen. You can find his web site on the TABC site. Terry

I got a response from Skip Kelsey. The LED kits he sells are only for D-Lamps. He does not sell kits for TD lamps. He also does not have an overseas supplier, but you can order the parts from his web site and have them shipped to you.
