MG MG Y Type - LONGEVITY OF OWNERSHIP

As I await access to the shower, somewhat difficult when one's daughters return for the hols, and before I take the dog out in the frozen wastes of Warwickshire, where it is currently - 10c I had a thought about the length of time that individuals have owned their Y Types.

I mentioned that Alan Chick had owned his Y in excess of 50 years. Is this a record? No prizes just a little thought provoker as you muse over the turkey carcass, empty wine bottles etc!

Enjoy the break"

Jerry,

Your thought made me think that I may qualify for being one, if not the youngest Y Owner being 20s when purchased? And now only just in the 30s. Must be having too much time to be thinking this! Here to my next 50 plus years here hopes! LOL

I was in my 20s (as was the car) when I bought my YB in late 1980.

I wonder if there is any one still alive who owned a Y type when new - I doubt it now as it's now so long ago.

One thing I have enjoyed over the years and again this holiday is re reading Michael Brown's Y type articles from 1947-53 copies of 'The Autocar' and also 'Longships' [aka Dr G E D Ellis ex RN] who wrote articles in the same magazine using his YA reg no MTT 183 up to 1956. Some of these are on this site with more to come.

Don't quite qualify for owning my YT the longest. Bought it (in my 20's) on 27 April 1962 in Southern California. Used it as my only car for a number of years. And have taken it with me to Hawaii, Virginia, and back to So California over the years.

Although I cannot claim continuouse ownership since 1960 when I purchased my YA. MNU 299, it was sold in part exchange for a 105e Anglia in 1966, I do claim however that I am a true Y type enthusiast because after a couple of sleepless nights I went round to the car dealer and purchased it back, He was only too pleased to get it off his forecourt and sold it to me at only half of what he allowed on the Anglia [£25]. I now have both cars in in my specially extended garage and since I have sold the 1954 TF [it was unsuitable for stiff limbs] I am giving a lot more effort to the YA.

I think that can/should be counted as "continuous" Brian! We can over look a momentary lapse of reason for a few days.

I did the same sort of thing just before moving to the US. I bought an MG YT from David Pelham and PXed my 1963 pull door handle MG MGB. After I had only been here a month or so I contacted David who still had the B ... and bought it back ... and I actually now own a second YT too (in addition to my Y). I am not so sure my wife would count that though as a momentary lapse of reason under any circumstance!

In 2006 I purchased y3117 from Les Quick who had owned the car since purchasing in 1954 a period of 52 years. The car has always been registered and still has the original registration plates we still stay in contact and just recently visited in emmy as she is affectionatly known.
