MG MG Y Type - MG Live! 2019 Silverstone Cancelled

The MGCC have today (09/03/19) announced that MG Live! has been cancelled as a result of Silverstone's need to resurface the track and this clashes with the dates set out for MG Live. Silverstone's owners are suggesting that it might be available for the event next year.

I have attended the event since the late 90s. In those times and through to around 2011/12 it was a 3 Day Event and was an excellent show. However, I have found since then that it has become a poor quality event with a degree of sameness.

Sad perhaps that it should be cancelled but perhaps it offers an opportunity for regional based shows annually rotated around the country. It would very much help widen the profile of MGs in general and perhaps MGCC itself.

Whether the Car Club share this view I have my doubts. A sea change has occured and ideas need to be developed and a breakaway from tradition might open new horizons and opportunities.

Jerry,

Agree with you comment on "Poor Quality event with degree of sameness" However the reality is car events where cars parked in open space will always be a degree of sameness surely? Folk looking at cars! If however you mean less trade stalls, inflated entry costs I agree poor value for money event.
MG Live is a Microcosm of wider problems of the MGCC and poor value for money, no spare parts or investment in R&D for those parts one cannot find for their cars, lots of club activities around it's hub at Abingdon with natters etc, but total lack of engagement compared to MG Owners Club in areas such as Hampshire where I reside, which by comparison have local events for Winchester, Solent, Southampton, Basingstoke and just cross border at Bournemouth and Newbury for owners. You may reply that it takes owners like me to set up events and not moan, however if a competing club already offer such services, then why compete? It really is time for clubs to work more in collaboration like public sector has had to in times of austerity.
The SF magazine offers little to an owner of a Y Type, with the occassional club update, often repeated to what has already been published on BBS or the register website / facebook page, but long gone are the days on an article giving advice as to "How to....? fix / restore / overcome that the early SF issues had. my guess is the International MG Y Type Register has more than filled this void.
I've been a non member of the MG Car Club for two years now, but get copies of the magazine scanned and emailed to me, having viewed every Y Reg SF pages since I ceased membership, the register website, and the main club site and see so very little change.

Compared to the Octagon Club which I know you are a member, they are regularly supplying new service parts, and the Bulletin is packed with articles of help to pre '56 owner.

I whole heartedly agree with your past assessment that the club hierarchy fail to listen to it's grass root members this being one reason why I left, after assessment of what was I actually getting for my yearly subscription? I know outside the club committee bubble other owners share similar view.

Richard
Thank you for posting that MG Live has been cancelled this year.

I was looking at dropping into MG Live on the Sunday, before flying back home, after 3 weeks touring Ireland and Northern Ireland. Luckily I hadn't booked our flights from Belfast to UK, now we will spend extra day in Belfast before fly across to Heathrow and on to Singapore.

cheers

Richard, you give a very good precis of the value of the MGCC. Some might argue that perhaps the long weekend is too long, I've never been so I wouldn't know. The one day event at Brooklands seems very popular, alas I haven't been to that either.

Your explanation of same old, same old has value for some, like me, but others may like the event repeating an old formula, obviously that's what the MGCC thinks.

There's a meeting in Florida called The Gathering of the Faithful, held at Daytona Beach, the same place as the famous Harley week long event. I've been to that, and I rather fancy going to the GOF. You wouldn't think that Tina & I could be hairy bikers, could you?

To see the full cancellation notice from the General Manager please go to the MGCC website https://www.mgcc.co.uk/ But can I draw your attention to this extract from it.

We are absolutely making every effort to find an alternative option for MGLive! in 2019, we do not want to add to the decline of classic motoring shows or events we’ve already seen recently, and we are not going to be beaten by this.

We are working very hard to find a solution for a venue that can hold our unique race & entertainment event, and hope to make a further announcement soon confirming the arrangements going forwards.

Did anyone go to the alternative event the MG Car Club hosted at Kimber House today? Maybe some photos of Y's to the Facebook page of Y Type Group.
