MG MG Y Type - MG OCTAGON CAR CLUB

Dear All

Last week I was voted onto the MG Octagon CC Committee to help promote interest and knowledge of the Y Type. Octagon provide spares for Y owners and whilst some of their prices are very competitive others are less so.

The Club has moved from Rugeley to Hinckley and is part of a business unit not far from the town centre and minutes from the M69, A5 and five minutes walk from the railway station. Members may be well aware that Pete Moore is the new Secretary. He lives very close to the unit and will be contactable during working hours. It is very convenient to anyone living in the Midlands with its proximity to the major transport links.

In my role on the Committee I am looking to ways in which an enhanced service can be provided to Y Type members. This may include spares, events and other activities.

If there are areas where you feel that the Octagon Club may help you as a Y owner - particularly spares then please do let me know.

Sincerely

Jerry

Jerry,

Congratulations and good luck regarding your selection! I am interested in Ys and hope to find one sooner than later.

Congratulations. I am their North America Rep.

One of the first things that needs to be done by the Octagon Car Club is to expand its membership. You can help this, and help promote the Y in one single very swift move by the Club and that is to help get insurance for them to sell spares to the USA and Canada. And this is something I am more than happy to help you with. I have a friend in the Corporate Insurance Underwriting world in the UK and he was all set 3 years ago to go to Club headquarters and look at their ENTIRE insurance package, and provide them with a quote for all their existing cover ... AND include insurance on shipping to the USA and Canada for FULL LIABILITY INSURANCE on parts ... for LESS than they were paying for their current restricted policy.

I had the green light from their Chairman and gave my Friend Paul the contact details of the Treasurer who Paul tried to contact three time ... and Paul received absolutely flat ZERO contribution back from him.

If the MGOCC IS serious about wanting to help the Y owners, then it needs to do this by getting them as MEMBERS and it will only do this if it is prepared to abandon this retisence to look at shipping to the USA and Canada. T and Y owners WILL join but not if all they get is the Bullettin. I will happily resume my active assistance in getting the Club the best insurance available ... but I cannot do that from this distance if their Treasurer is not prepared to work with my contact.

Drop me a note off line in June after you have settled in (and I have finished my Fire-fighter Academy training which is sucking up 6 hours a day on average after my full time job) and I will be delighted to work with you on this ... if there is a genuine wish in the MGOCC for its own survival. If you have Skype, even better.

I want nothing more than to see a healthy and vibrant MGOCC serving Y Owners worldwide.

As a Canadian former member I second everything Paul has said.I complained vigorously when this first happened and was astounded by the lethargy shown by whoever runs the OCC.
To lump Canada together with the US on product liability simply shows that the OCC has an insurer that does not know what it is doing. Terry

Thanks Guys

I will follow up both Paul and Terry's comments at our first meeting when that is arranged and will get back to you. I am pretty confident that there will be some significant changes in the future and all to the better of not only Y type owners but all pre-1956 MG owners.

Sincerely

Totally Terry - that was my first red flag, then after I heard that, a five minute conversation with my namesake and he confirmed to me that covering specialty made small run batches of automotive parts from a UK club to even the wonderfully litigiously happy USA would not be that expensive and he was also confident that he would be able to bound that in ... and still save them money. The Treasurer though effectively squashed it by non-cooperation.

Lets hope Jerry has more success in reopening the channel. I will work hard to ensure we at least have a shot at it. Look forward to hearing from you Jerry, as soon as you have your feet under the desk so to speak.

I emailed my membership application to the Octagon Club back in February (14th & 15th), and as yet they have not replied or charged my card ?. Can you find out where I stand please Jerry ?. Maybe they don't accept colonials ?.

By contrast, my application to the NEMGTR the same day was accepted & processed very efficiently without any delay - very professional club there.

Hi Tony

I will e-mail Pete Moore, the new Secretary, and ask him to find out what has happened. Certainly, he has been under pressure with the move from the old premises to the new. It's about 25-30 miles distance. However, that's no excuse. I'll also ask him to contact you by e-mail.

If you can forward me your e-address to jerrybirkbeck@btinternet.com then I'll copy you in the correspondence.

Sincerely

Jerry
