MG MG Y Type - MG Y Ahtray on eBay

One of those rare things and I do not know if it is original or reproduction.

There is a rear seat ashtray for MG Y on eBay at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=221035855003&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123.

It is on a Buy it now basis so I guess it wont be there long.

I have no financial interest in this item.

Does the price tag of £60.00(USD$95, AUD $96)reflect supply and demand or opportunism and avarice?
If you need one desperately then the price is the price you are willing to pay.
Our "hobby" is getting more and more expensive but still a wonderful way to enjoy our time on this planet.
Keep on MotorinG.

Hi Keith

Supply and Demand I think. There was a time when originals were mor reasonably priced at around £50 each and reproduction ones made by our own Steve Randle retailed through the MGCC Y Register Parts at about £25 each, but then sadly Steve stopped making them as they were costing him too much time and money. I think Tony Slattery was looking at trying to get some made too.

Richard - yeah, OK, fair cop ... I missed the S out. In mitigation though 10:41am your time is actually 2:41am my time so "geez a brake mon" ... and yes, deliberately misspelled break! LOL

Sold for the 60. Breaks my heart as I need two matched. Oh well, someday. Larry

Hi Larry

I had to buy mine in two bites I seem to recall. Unlike buses, these ashtrays (or ahtrays) don't come along in twos very often! They are very insular parts!

I have recently had my upholstery and interior done and my trimmer left the rectangular holes in the backs of the front seats, for ashtrays (I was too slow telling him not to!). Like most Y owners, it seems, I don't have any ashtrays so, rather than leave gaping holes, I made up some 'dummy' ashtrays out of fibreboard and pine, and painted them a similar shade of brown as the original Bakelite.

I found some small round brass knobs (now painted 'chrome') at the local hardware store, and they almost look like the real thing. They will suffice until the day that I find a couple of originals or good replicas - if I live that long! Didn't take too long - doesn't require much in the way of woodworking skills or equipment.

Can't seem to upload pictures - if anyone wants to see a couple of pics of 'work in progress' and the finished article in position in the seats, email me and I will send some pics direct.

Thanks to Paul, now know how to upload a picture! (I now know that it must be less than 2 MB in size)

Looks pretty good there Neil - certainly better than nothing as you say.

The first thing I said to my children when they were allowed into my Y was: 'keep your @#%^& fingers of the ashtrays!!!'

Willem

Do you allow them to flick their ash out of the windows then or do you make them bring their own ashtrays when they travel in the Y?

LOL!!

... Another picture of my "ash trays". I have since re-made the 'tray' bits, to replace the turned wooden knobs with metal knobs which I found after making these ones. Also realised that the knobs were too low, compared to the originals.
