MG MG Y Type - M.G. Y TYPE 70th Anniversary Round Britain Relay

M.G. Y TYPE 70th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
THE ROUND BRITAIN RELAY STARTS ON SATURDAY 3rd JUNE 2017

More than 50 M.G. Y Types and their drivers will traverse the roads of Britain during a special event to mark the 70th birthday of this rare model – and you can join them.
This year marks seven decades since the first M.G. Y Type rolled off the production line at the M.G. Car Company factory in Abingdon and to mark this milestone and raise awareness of this rare model, the innovative Round Britain Relay has been organised.
Sponsored by Stewart Miller & Peter James Insurance, the Relay will feature more than 50 Y Types – one of the biggest collections of the model to take part in any single event, and will see vehicles cover an undulating 1,834-mile route around the roads of Britain.
Organisers, the M.G. Car Club Y Type Register and the M.G. Octagon Car Club together with help from the M.G. Owners Club, are also inviting other classic car owners to join them on the route.
Seventy years on from the Y’s launch, the Relay will pay a special tribute to the model, involving M.G. owners and other classic car owners from all across the country.
THE ARRANGEMENTS – THE START
Comprising 37 stages, each around 50 miles apart, the Relay will feature checkpoints based around supermarkets dotted across the length and breadth of England, Wales and into Scotland.
Split into a southern route and a northern route, it will begin at 10am on Saturday, June 3rd at Lakeside Shopping Centre Tesco near Dartford, when two Y-Types will have the honour of launching the starting leg, one heading South on a route covering the south, south-west and Wales and one heading north to eastern England, then up to Scotland through Yorkshire and Northumberland before heading south through Nottingham.

Every Y-Type taking part in each stage will pass on one half of a specially-crafted 70th anniversary wooden baton, which will be put back together as one at the finish point, at Kimber House, the home of the MG, in Abingdon, on July 30th, where drivers will enjoy a reception and restorative afternoon tea.
The southern route will pass through this year’s Classic Nostalgia event at Shelsley Walsh, July 22nd and 23rd, where event-goers will be able to join in the excitement, with a selection of Y-Types taking part in a parade up venue’s famous hill in front of spectators.
Anyone who owns a classic car is welcome to join in the route, and event sponsor Stewart Miller & Peter James Insurance is offering a voucher for up to £100 worth of insurance to the person who captures the best image of a Y Type taking part in the Relay– visit www.mgccyregister.co.uk to find out more.
Company director, Peter James, said: “MG is a marque that is particularly close to our hearts so we are delighted to be involved in the celebrations to mark the rare Y Type’s 70th birthday.”
Among the ‘star cars’ taking part is an M.G. YB, affectionately known as ‘Little Gem’. Left to the M.G. Car Club by Tim Pennicott, it was initially received by Y Type Register members at Kimber House, and a painting by artist Kevin Parrish shows it being inspected by committee members, one of whom, Suzie Arnell, described it as a ‘Little Gem’ - the name has stuck since. Kept by the M.G.Car Club until 2016, the car was then auctioned at ‘M.G. Live. It was acquired by Maggie and Paul Grafham, who have brought it up to an immaculate condition, and will be taking the car on several of the northern legs of the event.
The Event, was the idea of club member Julian Bosworth, mentioned that often, national events are just too far away for many Y Type owners to attend, so why didn’t we take an event to them – and so the Round Britain Relay was born.
“We would love for any owners of classic cars to come along and join us for a few – if not all – of the stages, to help us broaden knowledge of and celebrate this fantastic M.G.”

Photographs and details of the event will also be included on the M.G. Y Register website – www.mgccyregister.co.uk and Facebook page and the M.G. Octagon CC’s site – www.mgoctagoncarclub.com

I am trying to find details of where and when the relay will be passing through Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland so that I might be able to view it and maybe join or support on part of the route. I would hope to be driving MGYA 6686 and would enoy contact.
I was at Teeslive Airshow last Saturday in Her. Picture attached.

Bob /David,

Yes, thanks back up for me too.

I have messaged John Foster on Facebook in the hope that I might be able to tie up with him on his leg from Gainsborough to York on the 6th June, and will contact Maggie to confirm.
RA Barham-Hall

I haven't seen your message on Facebook RA. I am picking up the baton on 6th June but then going back to Hedon, East Yorks, and meeting Dave Hilliam at York approx 10:00am on Wed 7th.
As you are from Durham would it be better for you to do the York to Darlington leg with Dave?
J Foster

Hi John,

Thanks for your response, the schedule chart on the MGCC Y Register site cannot be taken literally then.
I had noted that there was a desire to have back-up car in case of any problems and you were listed as the only car doing that leg and I was able to come down to Gainsborough. The chart shows you handing over the baton to David approx 1600/1700 hrs on the 6th June.

Leg 7 shows the baton going into hibernation for a month after leaving York at 10.00 7th JUNE before arriving and departing for leg 8 from Darlington to Cramlington on 7th JULY.

Can you please confirm where and when precisely you will be passing the baton to David and I shall try to link up with him for further information.

Thanks,
Bob

Apologies for the Websites outage. Unsure what the cause was. But, as most of you have gathered, it is up and running now.

Chris.
The www.mgccyregister.co.uk is down again, showing error in connection. It will win piston broke award for reliability LOL.

There are some excellent pics on the MGCC Y Register website of the start and the northern run on Day 1. Still waiting for pics on the southern route.

Tuesday 6th June
Hi friends,
What a windy, wet day to do a relay.

But it was good to meet other Y owners and to receive and pass on the "Y" baton on leg 6 of the Northern section of the Round Britain Relay celebrating the 70th anniversary of the production of the Y Type.

Three and four of our cars in various Morrisons Car Park are attracting great interest and comment from casual shoppers and many heads are turned for a double take as we travel on.

"Joy", my Maroon NTB 209, 1951 YA (Y6686) coped well with a more than 200 mile journey from Co. Durham to Gainsborough and back via York.

I met up with John Foster from East Yorkshire in his Black and White YA (Y4895) in Morrisons at Gainsborough until our baton arrived, a beautiful wooden Y which is one half of the finished structure, the other half travelling the southern section of the route.

Then, they appeared, two UMG Y-Types, one Brown belonging to Ashley Bateman and the other a Two-tone Green of Iain Crowther and Brian Cox. They had just completed section 5 having travelled from Stamford to Gainsborough.

John and I then swam, sorry, journeyed in the wind and rain to York, arriving right on rush hour and patiently found our way to the car park where we met up with Dave Hilliam, his better half and their little dog, wisely keeping in the car and dry. Dave's car being the two toned grey reg no. SK4269.

The baton duly passed on, John and I went our separate ways having discovered we had a good mutual friend from some years passed.

I hope the pics give a flavour of this event which has been a pleasure to have been involved with. I hope later to also join in the leg from Darlington to Cramlington, joining up with Andrew and Arlene Coulson.

Happy and Safe motoring to all Y owners where ever you go!

Not sure why I cannot upload pics. I shall keep trying but any advice would be helpful. Can I place more than one at a time?
Thanks.

Bob,

Try reducing the picture size, if it is the same size as that taken by a phone / camera it is highly likely the photo is too large. If you are having problems send the photo to the email address on international MG Y Register site, and I'll crop and send you a smaller copy to post by return if it is of help to you.

Thanks Richard for your response. I think I must be being thick. I have reduced size of pic but when I click on Upload on this board it does not give me any direction to a file source, nor can I copy and paste.

I have been successful before on this site but a long time ago and senility must be creeping in. However, I am stubborn and will persist,
Regards to all, but you will have to contain your enthusiasm for said pics for the moment.

I do see that my friend John Foster managed to post the front of his car sporting the Y Baton, he has a copy of my pics, so I may ask him to do the honours.

Bob has asked me to try and upload these photos, so I will give it a go, but I think I can only do one per post, so please be patient.
