MG MG Y Type - Mg y type dashboard chromes

Hello every one.
I am currently restoring a 1952 mg ya.
I have recently purchased a nes dashboard and chrome set from a well known parts suppliers in the uk as mine was completely missing. I was wondering if anybody could help me with the following.

How is the chtome strim seccured?
Is the chrome trim mounted to the dash board itself or to the instrument panel and glove box lid?

Does the lip on the trim hook over the dash itself ir over the glove box and instruments panel.

And finaly best option does anybidy have a det of second hand chrome trims already bent to shape as im not looking firward to trying to bednd these new ones!
Many thanks in advanced.
Kind regards

Hi Lee

Q. How are the chrome strips secured?
A. Short small screws with flat heads and the bead of the strip overlaps the edge of the wood. The screw head should be flush onto the strip.

Q. Is the chrome trim mounted to the dash board itself or to the instrument panel and glove box lid?
A. Around the glove box it is secured to the dashboard and is in a couple of pieces. Around the instrument panel it is secured to the instrument panel.

Q. Does the lip on the trim hook over the dash itself or over the glove box and instruments panel.
A. Over the dashboard for the glove box and over the instrument panel for that piece.

Q. And finally best option does anybody have a set of second hand chrome trims already bent to shape as I'm not looking forward to trying to bend these new ones!
A. I presume that is because you are concerned about the outside radius of the curves Lee? Just go slowly. Joins of the strips should be at the bottom of the opening, about midway along with securing screws in the middle of the width of the strip. Work the strip into the radius of one corner and screw before and after the corner. Using an assistant to hold the free end is a very good idea so it does not bounce around and work against you. It is easier to do if the dash board is NOT in the car but on a flat surface especially when you are nailing across the top.

Full details are in Let there be Ys page 160. If you do not have a copy of this great book you can buy a CD from me at http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/stores/yzpublications.shtml

Good day to you Paul,

Thank you for your response and information. I will purchase the book today thank you.
Regarding the trim around the glove box area. You say it is in 2 parts, whrre are the joints on this section? Is the poece between the hinges separate? Also the was the dash board has been made ,it has a resess where the inner glove box sits. This does not leave any wood to screw the chrome trim onto as it is very thin around there, i dint have access to another car unfortunately as a quick glance would probably clear my questions up. Is there a picture of the dashboard with the glove box open in the book?
Many thanks in advanced.

Hi Lee

I havent seen an order come through for you for Let there be Ys yet. Did you send one?

There is no picture with the glove box open.

Not oo sure I understand what you are saying about the recess etc. Can you post a picture or email me with one?

Paul
Paul Barrow

Hi Lee. See images attached of the (untidy) glove box on my YB.
The chrome trim around the glove box is in two pieces with the bottom section separated by the two hinges, so there is not actually a join. The second pic shows the recess for the ball catch at the top of the box trim.
Hope this helps.

Hi paul,
No i haven't done it yet as i am still at work. I will do it when i get home later this evening.
I cannot upload a picture gor some reason.
On the dashboard the glove box opening has a resess cut into it which halfes the tthickess of the dashboard. I assum it is where the glove box inner bucket would slot into. Does the chrome finisher screw through this into the timber aswell maybe. Do you have an email i could sent you a picture via?
Kind regards
Lee

Hi Lee - I just want to clarify Paul's advice in one respect : on my dash, the trim which surrounds the gauge insert is indeed fixed to the insert - but unlike Paul's, the lip faces outwards, matching the finish on the glovebox side. Seems logical to me. I'll try to attach a couple of photos, taken while I was mocking up a dashboard last week. Hope it helps. Regards, John.
PS - whereabouts in Victoria?

Small world, Lee - Neil's handiwork provided the new base, to which the remains of my old veneer are now fixed (See my recent thread). So I have the best of both worlds - new ply base, original veneer. Because I treasure the old "maker's marks" found in various places, I will excise the ones on the back of the old base, and attach them to the new unit for posterity. I have re-used my original glovebox lid and gauges insert, so the maker's marks on those pieces are preserved.

Tony - I've already tried to persuade Neil to join us at the Y70 event, but to no avail! Yours ... John.

The 70th Weekend will feature a sealed bid auction for a number of items that have been donated.

This includes two brand new YA dashboards with new Walnut Veneers.

I will post a photo of the dashboards a little later - pouring with rain at the moment.

It is a small world john, especially the car world.i am very much looking forward to meeting neil, and being part of the mg y group! I love how these cars bring people together and allow you to meet people you otherwise probably woukd never cross paths with.
Tony i look forward to seeing the dash board pics as i must admit im not entirely happy with the new dash board i have ,the venire on the panels is of a nice coulour although it certainly needs re finishing but the coulour on the dash board itself is just to light in my humble opinion. As my original dash was missing completely im not sure exactly what it shoukd bo , hense looking forward to seeing a selection of others!.
Thanks

Hi Lee, Here is a photo of three new dashboards.

The two in the foreground have no fittings and will be offered in a Silent or Sealed Bid Auction at the 70th Weekend in June.

I will post some other detail photos of the more complete dash for you.

Cheers

Tony
