MG MG Y Type - MG YB and Y on eBay

Nice looking MG YB on eBay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280785192293&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

Also an MG Y too - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220908401353?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

In both cases I have no financial interest in the sale of either car.

It is a pity that previous owners sold both original number plates to appease someone's vanity. Personally, I think that separating classic cars from their original registrations should be a flogging, if not hanging offence! Certainly, I would never buy a classic car without its original registration. I have it on good authority that cars with 'age related' plates sell for a significant discount to those on their original plates a5t auction

I agree with your thoughts Mike about the separating of registration numbers from the original vehicle (where it is pre 1974) is a practice that should be actively discouraged by DVLA. Though I don't think that would necessarily put me off buying a really goos example of a car that I would like to own.

When I had my TA the previous owner had rescued the original registration DT 8070 and DVLA ensured that it could not be sold on by making the registration 'non-tranferable'. Which seems an approach that ought to be considered now by DVLA in relation to pre-1974 vehicles.

When I imported my YT I had no say in the process of reistering it, other than providing all the information. (It had not been registered in the UK as it was exported to the US through Canada in 1950). I must say that both Customs and Excise and DVLA were both very helpful and gave me one of their unused marks - 828 XUV. I noticed that the YB for sale on e-bay has an XVU number, again one that was a new issue by DVLA. It's a shame that the original was not made into a non-transferable mark,

The YA on e-bay is registered NAS 781 which according to my Observer's Book of Automobiles (1955) is a Norwich registration. I don't know if that is a re-reg but you may know more than I do.

Fascinating thread,
All the best

Many apologies Guys

My posting was littered with typos, missed words and most odd spellings!

I think they are very obvious! Though 'goos' means(good) and 'reistering' is missing the letter 'g'.

So my apologies for having to read some poorly constructed prose and appalling spelling!

According to my list, *AS registrations were originally issued in Scotland (Inverness), as were all with a S in the last two letters. The *AS series, among others, has been used for 'age-related' re-registrations since 1983. There are a lot of classics which are clearly re-registrations and they always stand out like the proverbial sore thumbs at car shows, to me at least.

My source of information on registrations is an excellent document produced by the Chiltern Vehicle Preservation Club, with which I have no connection. The document is available at the following link:

Mike and Jerry....Couldn't agree with you more...

I consider it really important that a vehicle retain its original registration and would pay a premium for that.

Clearly if the car has come from abroad an age related number has had to be issued...but I agree with Mike....those 'S plate' cars stand out a mile.

I was told that the S registrations were issued by the DVLA as Scotland had only used a fraction of their allocation upto 1962.

Rob

PS I agree with Mike 'AS is Nairnshire - Inverness (thats according to my 'Ladybird' book!)
