MG MG Y Type - MG YB Hub puller

An eBay item for all MG YB owners is http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180820830134&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123 - MG YB Hub puller.

This tool is not needed on the MG Y or Y/T.

I have no financial interest in this item.

I thought you should not use this kind of puller on YB/TD drums, but instead one which pulls by the wheel studs. I read that pulling at the drum's rim risks breaking it.
Remo Peter

Peter, is such a puller available and do you have a photo...I am tired of hammering my brake drums off as I have done for the last 30 years! I too get the impression that it's not good for the drums.

Presumably first you are slackening off the brake pads from the drums too before attempting to remove the drums?

You asked for a picture and that has given me cause to think about going through my entire BMC Service Tool book and putting together an extract of tools for MG Series Y for the website if you guys think this a good idea? These are also covered in the Workshop Manuals in the section called Special Tools but I suspect that my Special Tools book may be more comprehensive.

Meanwhile, here is BMC tool 18G.304 originally Nuffield tool 68822

According to the Official MG YB Service Time Allowances David you should allow 1 hour for the removal and refit of each hub - LOL, yeah, really!

Also David and others, electronic copies of the Workshop Manuals and much more are now available on CDs from http://www.mgcars.org.uk/imgytr/stores/yzpublications.shtml: well worth the money as you can print off individual pages when you go to do a job, get them dirty and greasy and then throw them away like a shop towel after you are done.

Paul,
The puller as shown is the basic unit. To make it work you need the additional three internally threaded long studs which screw onto the drum studs. This enables the puller to "straddle" the centre of the hub. See attached illustration from the YB Special Tools section. The threads should be BSF. Hope this helps.

Keith D Herkes

Hi Keith

You are correct that my picture shows the basic unit only, that is because I have shown Tool 18G.304. You are also corect in that you will also need three bolts to use the puller.

Up to chassis YB 0285 these were Tool 18G.304D and were indeed 1/2inch BSF. However, from YB 0286 to YB 1551 you need three Tool 18G.304A and these were i/2inch UNF. It is a strange quirk of part numbering that the later cars use 304A whereas the earlier cars use the number 304D. Thanks for pointing out though that YB owners will need the applicable 3 extra bolts though. When I build the Special Tools page I will include both 18G.304D as well as 18G.304A bolts.
