MG MG Y Type - MG Y'Type on (UK) TV

Did anyone see UMG665 on the Miss Marples program on BBC2 2.55pm Monday 30th. December?
I just caught a glance of it when changing channels, It was shown several times during the program.
If I knew it was on I would have set the vidio!
stephen randle

I didn't see it today but I have seen that episode before and kept it on video just because of the Y type's appearance in it. Does anybody know where UMG 655 is now? I've never seen it at any shows or rallies, although I attend mainly events in the North.
Andrew Adamson

Maybe we should set up a page for Y Types on Film?

I was kindly sent a copy recently of the film The Sweeny - if you like your Ys on celluloid this is one not to miss - only appears in the opening 10 mins or so but is great to see. One to watch for!

Yes,I too watched the Miss Marples episode on the Beeb last Monday......great glimpses of our favourite car !!
Unfortunately I was also too slow to get the video on,and I agree with Paul that it would be interesting to compile a list of films in which Y's appear, even if only briefly.
Let's be honest about it, the only thing worth watching on TV is some of the better "oldies".
Best wishes to all for 2003 and happy Y motoring...Rob

There is another 'Y' type on a WW2 b/w film, about espionage, where the aircraft taking the 'spies' away has a YA run up to it to discharge them. I cannot remember the name of the film, but what is so interesting, the film is based in 1940-1943, made in the early 1950's, and uses a car that was not in existance for the year!!!! But when did film makers ever let the truth get in the way of a good story?

One Sweeney episode featured a bank manager who's family was taken hostage driving a black 'Y' - a 'YA' I think. About 2 minite's worth of it being parked.
David Mitchell-Gogay

That is the one I mentioned David - you very kindly sent me a copy of the video. Great fun, thanks

Neil; CAR or Story?

Enough, you blokes are so cruel. With 2 YAs in the garage, you keep teasing me with these appearances on the tellie. It is like our thirst here for Campion and Lug videos. Am an MG die-hard, but that Lagonda is, ...oh well. Anybody have some taped episodes?

From the CT do I guess Conneticuit? If so, I am afraid you may be sadly disappointed as UK PAL format is very different from US PAL format video/TV recording signal. To play back a UK video you would need a UK PAL video player and TV. They can be converted but it is very expensive. You will have to emigrate I am afraid!

Paul:

We went down this road in a TD/TF thread not long ago. The conversion options/drawbacks were examined. I went through it a while back after participating in the Circuit of Britain in 1990. Had a load of fabulous videos I bought at Donnington and Prescott Hill, only to find they were initially unusable. As luck would have it, a friend of my brother was into video documentaries at the time and was able to convert them for me. As he no longer does it, I guess I must cross the pond and look for a one bedroom garage somewhere.......

According to What Video magazine t would cost approx £250 to get a TVCR (TV with VCR built in) that accepts PAL or NTSC tape or signal.
Alternatively, get the film on DVD and a multi-region player.

If screen appearances are of interest, I have two vidoes with Y stars.

First is the thin green line of our YA "towering" over a V12 Lagonda Le Mans replica at the start of the 1999 Monte Carlo Rally. Lasts (on a steam powered video) a few seconds only.

Second is a modified YB which did the Peking to Paris Rally. It was a Dutch/Anglo crew I think and the car is bright yellow so easily spotted throughout the film.

Maybe I should bring it along to one of the events... ?? AGM ??

Andrew, Bring it to the AGM, will make it a bit more interesting!!!
