MG MG Y Type - Millie Miglia!

UMG 662 and I are due to start the Millie Miglia tomorrow. 1000 miles Bresica - Rimini - Rome - Florence - Parma - Bresica. Heavy rain forecast for tomorrow but hot thereafter. After my over heating worries on the Monte I am nervous about the Futa and Raticosa passes! Still, now have a high flow radiator, Evans waterless coolant and a Kenlow fan. If you want to follow our progress take a look at my Twitter feed @mctrhanson or search #MG2MM. Avanti!

Best of luck again and have fun.

I don't do twitter, but maybe I should look into it.

Marc, congratulations yet again, this time on finishing the 'Mille Miglia'. Completing this 4 day 1000 mile trial across Italy is no mean achievement in your YB, and to finish 271st out of 450 cars (mainly sports cars) is tremendous. I followed your blog entries, and the first day in the rain looked awful!

Well done to both of you, now UMG662 deserves a bit of a rest after completing the 'Monte Carlo Classique' and now the 'Mille Miglia'. What comes next we wonder?

You have done more this year to wave the 'MG' banner than any other MG owner. After the success of your feats in a YB this year maybe the MG Car Club will keep their YB 'Little Gem', rather than sell it!

Well done Marc.

Brian, more chance of finding gold under rainbow than there is of Little Gem staying with car club. I'm sure the decision is made irrespective of any funds that could be used to sort problems, lets face truth its Y type and unless your into Y's they are looked down on compared to other models by those power brokers more interested in racing and Silverstone events.

Thanks all. UMG662 behaved very well indeed. It was very hot on days 3 and 4, about 30 degrees, and we had some high speed motoring to do plus some high passes to climb. She got a bit hot(!) but the new radiator and evans coolant did the trick. The new Kenlow fan helped in the slower heavier traffic but obstructed the radiator too so always had to be on. We had it on a manual control. Only problem was a blown fuse that caused us to lose brake lights and instruments. We replaced the first fuse but it did not solve the problem so we checked around for shorts etc before eventually realising the new fuse was defective even though not blown. We also managed to warp the front drums! The old girl will have a bit of a rest (she will however be doing the Double 12 autotests at Brooklands next month) and a thorough going over before any more adventures. Full report will be posted on my blog in a week or so.

On final analysis we came 271st out of 456 cars, 12th out of 27 in class and 5th out of 10 MGs. Not bad considering we had no handicap. Amusingly we beat F1 and Le Mans legend Jacky Ickx whose factory entered Porsche Spider broke down on the last day. I will be dining out on that for a while..

Just a thought if your car still suffers from a bit of overheating. Have you checked that the front and rear holes from the main block to the side water gallery, under the inlet/exhaust manifold, are totally clear. It is only possible to see these holes by removing the two core plugs, but sometimes the two holes are partially blocked by webs of iron that were not removed after the casting process. Removing any such webs, plus a rad with all tubes clear (not sure what a high flow rad is), should solve overheating problems.

Great story there Marc on Jacky and his Porsche ... but then I expect no less!

Well done indeed

I was looking through Mike Lawrence's book on the MM trying to find out how MG TBs took part this year when as far as I can tell they did not take part in the MM in period when I saw the attached photo. I was wondering whether the sports car was a TB (though I think its a PB) when I suddenly noticed the shapely rear of the UK registered Y Type to the right. The photo is from 1947 so the Y must be DRX 557, the Autocar Magazine YA press car driven by Jim Dugdale. Maybe one day I will find an equivalent photo of UMG 662!

Mark,
yes the sports car is a P type (can't tell if a PA or PB) but on 16 inch wheels by the look of it. You can tell it's a P type by the small lift up MG badged cover on the front panel for starting handle access, and the mounting of the horn. TA/TBs had badge bar across the front with altette horn and fog light mounted on it, plus a cut-out for the starting handle.

PA, honycomb grill.
looks like a foreign plate?

Brian, thanks for the identification tips! Its odd, I can find no reference to a TB ever competing in the MM yet this year there were three - none on the special list (where I was stuck in the YB) for cars that never competed in period. I wonder... When I first applied to the organisers saying the YB was not eligible as it did not do the race in period they said it was as the approved list included the MG PB. I think maybe they thought the YB was a variant of the PB! Maybe they have thought the same of the TB?!
