MG MG Y Type - Miracles still happen; Y-treasures

Miracles still happen.

This week I saw some Y-type trafficators advertised on a local website and because the seller lives in the next village, I sent an email to the seller asking if he had some more Y-type parts.
His answer was that he probably had, but wasn't sure because he was clearing the parental home and his diseased father had ones 'slaughtered' an Y. You're welcome to search in a the box of unidentified parts, he said.
Not expecting much, my first surprise were the four door panels in red, piped white; just as my door panels. Although my door panels are better, from these I could salvage some white piping to repair my worn drivers' seat!

The box of parts was a munition case with about 20 kg of Y-type small parts and fasteners. A lifetime supply of Withworth hardware!
The next blow was an original toolkit, about 50% complete, tatty and rusty but hey!: it was there!
Then I was run over by a train, or at least it felt like that when he showed me 'his heirloom' as he called it. It was the RHD dashboard part with dails and switches. Still reeling from the toolkit I almost didn't look at it, but then the speedometer caught my eye. IT WAS A KPH SPEEDOMETER!!!
How many were made and what is the chance of finding one 10 miles (or 16 km!) from home??

Then depression kicked in because he was asking quite a lot of money for his trafficators and as I was in a hurry I promised to come back the next day to have a closer look at his treasures.

After a sleepless night the next day I turned up in the Y accompanied by my wife and son who where under strict instruction to act charmingly and nice.
After two hours of pleasant conversation and rummaging through the barn I couldn't take it any longer and asked for a price for the lot. He asked to make an offer and with much trepidation I offered twice the sum he asked for the trafficators (you've got to remember that my wife was with me...). To my great relief he accepted my offer and together with my son I've been sorting parts for hours now. Pure bliss!

Oh, did I mention the uncracked bootlid badge and partslist supplement for the LHD One and a Quarter Litre that came with the lot?

Willem,

Well done, he knows it will all end up in a good home, and cared for.
I went and looked at the MG's locally in Eastbourne yesterday and had a good chat with a local guy who has recently sold a YT for a good price, and also YB from Petersfield was present. Had the family so I left my MG's at home, but worth the two hours drive to see some truly nice cars.

Hi Willen, congratulations on your find, is the boot lid badge for sale as mine is missing, Graham
Graham Sharpe

Boot badges are a real problem - these are unique to Y-Type boot lids. They are not the same as the grille badge.

If you are really desperate Graham, and Willem needs his latest find, I have one that is damaged/chipped and needs re-enamelling. Send me an email if you are interested.

Cheers

Graham,

My current badge is a little bit cracked and on both badges the chrome has worn through but the copper can also be shined very nicely as can be seen on the picture.
My intention is to fit the new badge if the thread is strong enough. Then you are welcome to buy the current one if you are interested. We'll keep in touch.

hi Willem and Tony , thanks for getting back to me about the mg boot badge.I might try fitting a modern mg badge for the time being, Graham

The front grille badge for a MG ZR would likely do the job. Available from Rimmer Bros.

Don't ask me why I knows this !.

Paul, you asked:
'Do you know/any trace of the original Y Chassis number he slaughtered?'.

I discovered that on the back of the dashboard panel the number 3780 is written.
Could it be that a dashboard set with a KPH dial in it was marked this way for Y3780?

MPH dashboard sets could have been used in any car on the line.
