MG MG Y Type - More Hood fitting

Hey all, can someone with a YT take a look at the following;
1. How far apart are the "straps" that space the bows?
2. Are the "straps attached to the bows with 1 or 2 screws?
3. Please describe how the "flap" is attached to the rear most bow?

Ever grateful, Tom
Thomas McNamara

Tom
As mentioned in a previous thread - LTBYs Chapter 11, pt 15 (Weather Protection Equipment for the YT) has a lot of information on the hood.

The Hood spacing strap is attached to 2 long lift the dot studs across the back. (see diagram in LTBYs pg 149) These are where the 2 hood straps attach and will indicate the distance between the straps.

Not sure if my hood is original, but each Hood strap is attached with 2 screws on each bow, with an addition section of strap sitting over the screws.

Thank you for your reply Stuart. I have read and reread the info in LTBY's but measurements are few.

Could you be so kind as to enlighten me on two issues? How is the "flap" attached to the rear most bow and how are the strap screw "covers" attached? Glue? Thanks, Tom
Thomas McNamara

Tom

You are lucky, that the front end of my hood has not been attached to the front wooden rail yet:

1. The approx distances between the strap-moutig holes are:
Rear Bow = 858mm
Middlke Bow = 848mm
Front Bow = 838mm

2. Definitely 1 screw only (I have detail photos of two different bows to prove this).

3. Unfortunately, I do not know myself how the rear bow flap is attached - can anyone else please let us know?

I do not understand what you mean by strap screw covers. please enlighten me with a photo.

Don't get mis-led by the attached picture, showing double screw fastening of the straps. I had drilled the extra holes myself to make the whole thing a bit more sturdy.
Originally only the rear bow used two holes on each side - of wich the outer ones served to fasten the wide "form piece" made of aluminium.

Hey Anton, once again, THANK YOU! Stuart says that his straps are screwed to the bows and then the screw heads are covered with more strap material. This is what I was wondering about. I assume that the additional "covers" were to keep the screw heads from contacting the hood material and wearing it through? The question is: How are they kept in place.

I see that you have some kind of foam attached to the rear bow. Is that something you have added to prevent wear and/or flapping on the hood at speed?

Like you, I will use 2 screws to attach the straps but the foam piece is new to me. I don't see it in any parts catalogs.

Your picture shows a lot and answered some questions. THANKS again. Be well, Tom

Hi Tom

I have never seen any screw head covering in all my research.

Check the attachment. Other than the wrong cloth-covering of the three bows this is pretty original.
If you look close, you will see that only the rear bow has a screw in each corner that prodruced through the hood material - other than that, the hood is just "lying " on top of frame and straps.

What you probably mistakenly identified as a piece of foam is in fact a pressed piece of aluminium (shaped like a rear pumper of a Y-Type).
Attached find a side view and I will post two more pics.

Best regards
Anton

Hey Anton, THANKS again. I have never seen nor heard of the aluminum "chaff guard" before. Is that sonething that came with the car? Be well, Tom

Hi All, I'm interested in how the hood strap attaches to the bows as mine is not original and has deteriorated and needs to be replaced. It was attached to the studs at the rear and stapled the front hood bow. It just sat on the intermediate bows. See attached. Regards, Ewan Y2888, Y4825.

Hello Tom
Yes, what you call chaff guard is an original feature. See also Edward's subequent thread and photo.

Hello Edward
Thank you for the two pictures, showing the aluminium cover.

As you say, the straps were attached to the rear-body-section by studs and/or countersunk screws with cup washers. At the front the straps were nailed to the wooden front piece that rests on the windscreen top.
On the three intermediate bows, the traps were fastened with short self-tapping screws and dished cup washers.
If you check the photo, I sent on Febr. 11th, at 17:39:45, you see the postion of the screw holes.

Have fun
Anton

Hi all, my apologies for the incorrect information on the flap over the screw and cup washer.

Today I had a look at the two hoods and straps I have. The newer strap (only a few years old) has a piece of tape glued to the strap as a flap, whilst the older one (and I think it may be original) has no flaps.

I like the idea of the flap as it would stop the screw and cup washer from wearing through the hood.

The old strap shows they were attached to the frame with single screws and washes for the front two bows and with two offset screws at the rear bow.

Measurements along the strap to the bow screw holes from the front face of the timber are 33", 41 3/4" and 60".

The attached photo shows my old strap which consists of two pieces of fabric wrapped around tape. This tape looks very similar to what the hessian garden tape I use to tie up plants.

Hey all, has anyone seen an aluminum "Chaff Guard" for sale or even a drawing with dimensions? be well, Tom

Thomas McNamara

Hi Stuart
Thank you for the clarification and the measurements

Tom
Sorry, can't help you there much. Best to check with a local YT.
