MG MG Y Type - New Guy Needs Parts

Hi Folks,

First time for me on this site.

I have a '49 YA in need of many parts. It has been off the road for 20 years. I think it deserves to get back on.

I am out of touch with the availability of parts and need some pointers.

To start with, does anyone out there have:-
a serviceable boot lid,
dampers front and rear,
fuel tank.

Any idea where I can source the correct 8" headlamps and (I know this is asking just too much) 'D' lamps for the rear.

Thanks

Rob

Good Evening Rob

Something to watch out for. The YA and the YB look so similar that it is easy to assume that parts off a YB will fit a YA. In practice this is not always so. An instance of this is that the YB and YA front suspension wishbone/shock absorber assembly look identical. E-Bay is a good source of spares.

Many years ago a friend with a YA wanted to use the wishbones off my crashed YB to use on his YA. We found out the hard way that the fixing holes are different and just won't fit. The back axles are also entirely different.

I have some rear dampers off a YB which I will be putting on E-Bay, but would not be in the least surprised to find that they do not fit a YA.

Best wishes for getting the YA on the road again. Y-types are beautiful cars to drive and I am sure that all of your efforts will be amply rewarded.

Clive is right Rob - somethings you have to watch out for but most are a straight swap.

As to your list:
a serviceable boot lid,
You are looking for a fairly rare bit here as this is an area where most Ys rot out. Send me some pictures of the whole of your rear section of the car and I will let you know what can be done with them. Mick Beakhouse runs a great operation called Sportscar Metalworks (See www.mgytypes.org Links page) and has supplied my needs both here in the US as well as when I lived in the UK. I will let you know if he will be able to help you with this.

dampers front and rear,
You could watch eBay for the right bits - which come up occaisionally ... or you could just have yours rebuilt by Stevson Motors in Birmingham UK who have been recommended to us by Y owners in the past for good work. Again, details on the website www.mgytypes.org Links page.

fuel tank
eBay is your best bet. How bad is yours? They can be patched but this is a skilled operation. Again, send me details off line.

Any idea where I can source the correct 8" headlamps and (I know this is asking just too much) 'D' lamps for the rear
Well, your best bet here is to try Gregory's Autoparts for the 8 inch lamps ... but they will be spendy as they also fit early T Types. You are looking for Lucas MBD.140 50458 up to Y/4759 - if your car is after that, 8 inch are not appropriate and the cheaper Lucas S700s are your baby. Gregory's can also be found on www.mgytypes.org Links page.

D Lamps - Gregory's can also supply these too, but you might want to look at the Shopping Mall and buy the LED conversion kit from TA Terry.

As always, hope this helps

Rob, I have a set of shocks that I think are from I YA that I got as a parts car years ago. If the headlights are the same as for a TC then I have a set for sale. If interested please send me an email to "jenntoo at shaw.ca"

The correct YA front shock/dampers are Luvax Girling PR5X/2 No. S87/30 and the rear are Luvax Girling PPR5/7 L.H. No S.8731Y for the left and Luvax Girling PPR5/8 R.H. No S.87/31X for the right.

A great resource will be for you to download a copy of the Alternate Parts List that John Lawson compiled and that he has given permission for us to make freely available via www.mgytypes.org. If you go to the News page, it is the second item on the Downloads list on the left margin.
Look forward to recieving a full registration from you and entry to Ys on Parade soon so that everyone can share your Y and lend their moral support to your rebuild.

I may be able to help with a bootlid. The one on my YB had been repaired, but not particularly well during the restoration of the car by the previous owner. There are two cut-outs in the inner skin and quite a lot of filler.

I was aware of this when I bought it, and intended to have it repaired professionally afterwards. However, I managed to find another bootlid in very good condition. It just needs painting. I intend to get the 'new' one sprayed as soon as the car goes to rest for the winter. The bootlid currently on the car will be surplus to my requirements, although I intended to keep it as a spare - just in case!

I would be prepared to let you have the one on the car if it is of interest. It is definitely restorable, although beyond my capability. If you let me have your email address, I will send you some photographs of the lid in situ on my car.

I might also have one 8" headlamp, although I am not sure if it is the correct one for the YA. I bought it as a spare for my Lanchester, but it was not the right one. I am not sure of the model number; it is in my rented barn about 5 miles away at the moment. I will check the number later in the week if you are interested.

I would endorse the recommendation to search eBay for parts. They do come up from time to time.

Good luck with the project.

I have a Fuel tank gathering dust in my garage. It wasn't leaking when I replaced it with a Stainless Steel one but it has been sitting there for over ten years. Please contact me off-line if you are interested.

Mike,

Is the YB bootlid the same as the YA? I know the SWC is different.

Willem

I believe they are the same. The gap between the boot lid and the Spare Wheel Compartment was reduced by the height increase of the SWC lid.

Thanks Paul, I was at work and didn't have quick access to some pictures.

Hi Just joined. I have a YA 1951 which I have just bought, is in a total restoration condition. However it does come with a load of spare bits n pieces.I have sorted most of the parts I require to begine the momoth task (Seller told me it just wanted TLC) (I bought it sight unseen) this was due to fact it was advertised in classic cvar mag, and I trusted him. Oh well nae to worry. Good job I have been around these type of cars for the last 60 years. I do recognise just where everythig should go. I do have several body parts over. Wings, doors, BOOT LIDS, BONNETS, Jackalls, Even a spare TUB... Windscreen, some glass and several door caps and window surrounds. I also have a spare Xpag block, and a Wolsley 444 engine block canshaft etc. There are several seats,Maroon and Green...... door cards, and various panels.
My needs are two (2) Headlights, two Lucas 1130 side lights, Back Bumper, D Lamps, Tyres. I also have a set of 16inch Wire Wheels Painted. Not too sure if I intend to fit them. These are in excellent condition.. I am just trying to recover some of the money I over paid for this collection.
Maybe you would like to make an offer for any parts you may require. I do tralvel from my home in Cebtral Scotland to Birmingham area, also north Yorkshire. Can always send photograpgs by Email
