Looks a really nice car - a bit pricey though?
David Mullen

Oh I dont know - £7,750 is top endish definitely, however, it is a YB (1/6th as many made as YAs) and the seats etc. look in VG condition (£1500 - £2000 for a full retrim) plus its a University Motors car with the dash plaque and original YMG plate.

It is a shame that the seller has the wrong chassis number - he quotes 7B0976 and clearly it should be YB 0976.

Would I buy it? Yes, if I was in the UK and had the dosh.

I was out in Romsey, Hampshire this week, taking my badly shot YB doors to an engineer for inspection to see if my 4 doors could be re skinnned. Whilst waiting at a garage a male looked in the car and asked if the doors belonged to a Morris, I correctly informed him it was from a YB and he said, "I HAVE A YB" Oh great I thought, thinking on my feet I said "CAN I HAVE A LOOK" Although the chap was rightly cagey at first seeing a 27 year old short cropped shaven headed youth ask to look at a car at his home address, I eventually managed to obtain a telephone number and 15 minutes later had the pleasure of seeing YMG 50.
I can vouch the car is for sale in good condition, the paintwork looks considerably better than the car I purchased recently. The seats are brand new having been fully restored. There is the University motors dash plaque. According to the owner the Jackall system leaks hence doesn't work currently thought sure it would with tweaking and sealing. The owner said the car had been to Belgium earlier this year and there was no problems.

Hope you enjoyed reading my tale as much as I did when I got to see a wonderful car by such luck and so local.

£1500-2000 for a re-trim?
I know that my car was re-trimmed 8 years ago, but a full leather trim as original and headlining cost £600 and attracts praise from all who see it so not just a cheap and cheerful job.

Keep taking the tablets, Paul.
j m nicholson

North South divide I gues plus leather has gone up substantially in the 8 years. However I am very pleased with mine and consider it was good value as it was done by a Connolly Leather worker.

Richard - doesnt your story remind you of something that happened many years ago?? As I recall I was having a tyre fixed at our local tyre bay when this teenage Oyke came up and simply asked "Is it a YA or a YB?" The rest, as they say, is History!
Paul Barrow

I bought my first ever classic from Pioneer Autos about 10 years ago. 'Twas a '67 MkI MGB Roadster. They were situated in Whitchurch then.
I can vouch that they are a good honest establishment and that what you see is what you get.

Richard - don't stand for being called an Oyke! :-)

Cheers,
Saul.
Saul

Could you gentlemen please keep it simple(r); what is an Oyke? No on-line dictionary/translator I know, knows the word.... Not that I'm curious!
Willem van der Veer

Saul - I thought it was better than referring to Richard a teenage yob!!

Willem - Oyke = country boy

Anything to do with yokel?
Over here you'd call him a gombeen!

And I always though Oiks were spelt that way! Rob

I'm a new Y owner and I have a University Motors badge but I don't know where it could be attached on the Y type. The car is some distance away being finished off. The badge has no screw holes, just a plain back. I'm interested to know where it was originally fixed on the dashboard (if it was the same badge or plaque of course). The badge I have is round, 50 mm diameter with two shields in the centre, "University Motors" at the top and the word "Special" at the lower part. I have seen a photo on the internet showing this badge attached to the centre of a steering wheel on another MG vehicle.
Any advice please?

John Ellis

Hi John

The badge you have is not the one UM attached to Ys. The one attached to Ys is oblong and has two lugs - one on each end like little ears so that this could be screwed onto the dashboad between the instrument panel and the glove box at mid panel height.

Don't know about the spelling of Oikes or Oykes, but he is a nice enough guy now!! Must be all those YBs you own eh Richard?

Paul
Paul Barrow

Hi All,

Re. the University Motors badge,(please wait a moment while I put on my anorak!) the one on my YA doesn't have 'ears' The two fixing holes are within the rectangle, and are part of the pressing (ie were not drilled afterwards). I don't know if the badge is original or a later repro.

Incidentally, a round badge has just popped up for sale on eBay.

Keep smiling,

Bill.
Bill Bennett

Bill is correct - the two holes are in the rectangle - I was too lazy to go out and check! Caught out - nice one Bill.

Regarding this YB currently for sale at Pioneer Autos (YB0976, formely owned by Joan and Lindsey Gates, Hampshire, UK), has anybody here ever seen this car in person?

Mr Lindsey might have owned it for about 20 years. He has died recently.

Would anyone know exactly what extent of restoration he has done on it?

What else can you say about the way it is performing and, most of all, do you know of ANY rust on/under it?

Thank you for your help & best regards,

Gilles Bachand

Earlier in this thread there is a report from Richard Knight (knightspain @ hotmail.com - remove spaces)who has seen the car.

Did you contact the guy in Seattle/Redmond who I put you in touch with?

Paul
Paul Barrow

Hi Paul,

Yes, I read Mr Knight's report and tried to contact him in order to get a bit more details, but I haven't had any luck.

Yes, I also spoke with the Seattle owner that you had the kindness of referring to me, but we agreed that his car needed a bit more attention that I was willing to give at this time.

Last week I finally got to ride in Steve Neal's (Bunswick, ME) souped-up YA. Boy, does this car go! I also had the pleasure to meet a lot of nice MG enthusiasts that he knows.

This first ride in a Y confirmed that it's the car for me. Just the right size, engine, behavior, etc. All is perfect. Now, I just need to concentrate and be patient in order to get my hands on a rust-free & dependable example.

Best regards,
Gilles

It is tragic but the late Skip Kelsey had a YA. Dont know what condition it is in, but knowing Skip I would expect it to be good.

You could contact Shadetree Motors in CA and ask them what is happening to it and what condition it is in if you like (925846 1309).

Paul
Paul Barrow

Hi again Paul,

Yes, I got that tip too from another source and called Shadetree 2 weeks ago. Mr Kelsey's car was already sold.

As you can see, I'm doing my homework seriously! Next thing I'm thinking about doing is hiring the services of a clairvoyant so I can say that I've covered all the bases.

Keep at it Gilles - you get what you go for in this life.
