MG MG Y Type - No comment

I see in the current issue of SF the Rover MGF pages show its members how to change a rotor arm. Perhaps this is neccessary for the modren motorist who leaps to his or her mobile phone at the hint of any problem with their car. I wonder how many Y Type owners need showing how to find and change a rotor arm?

You would be surprised Neil, not everyone actually services their own car - I can immediately think of several lady owners of MGs here in Washington who enjoy driving them, and the social side of MGs, but technically do not have the slightest interest in that stuff.

As they say "Why bother when you can have a mechanic do it. After all, why have a dog and bark yourself?"

There are several male members who would also happily jump into the frame too so it isnt a sexist thing either. If I hadn't learnt how to do it at collegeI wouldnt be interested in learning now either.

Again - how many of our 96,000+ visitors know how to build a webpage ... but it doesnt stop people using it - does it Neil ... LOL!

The arm inside the distributor Steve

Oh, you mean that thing I took off once when I was 17 and forgot to put back on and then spent 30 minutes trying to figure out why the car wouldn't start? Also the thing I took off on the YB to oil the distributor a few months ago and accidentally pulled the spindle up a little which resulted in the weights coming loose and jamming and stripping the drive gear off at which point it fell into the oil pan?

Oh, THAT rotor arm! ;-)
Steve Simmons

I guess that, at some stage in his life, even Neil had to read how to change a rotor arm.

Yes Steve THAT ROTOR ARM

First time for everyone Andrew - when you know what you are looking for!

My point was, yes I did need to look for it back in the very distant past , I probably used the handbook, but I did not need to refer to five photos in an international magazine to be able to locate it! Surely the MGF tribe could have found something a bit more interesting to put in their twice-yearly centre spread- such as why you need to stretch the head bolts so much, or a bit on the construction of the K series engines, ( the first ones were made of plastic...) Surely an MG magazine is to educate, creat interest, not print the mundane.

One of the reasons I enjoy the Y (and the MGB) is because it HAS a rotor arm! For modern cars the mobile phone is the ONLY useful tool to carry.....

I would have given my left (rotor?)arm to witness the look on Neils' face when he shook his head in disbelief about something that is obvious for a veteran tinkerer, but Neil, you have to keep in mind that some young "mechanics" have never changed contactpoints. With that knowledge it is good that SF publishes "technical" articles.

OK, I know when I am beaten. The January 2007 Safety Fast Notes for the Y Register will all be about, guess what, " How to change a rotor arm"....
