MG MG Y Type - Noise reduction in the XPAG

One of the difficulties in driving an old car is engine noise
...being spoiled by modern cars does not help...any ideas on quieting the xpag in a Y....maybe a papier mache rocker box cover to go over the metal one...or maybe modifying the timing chain to take a modern belt..just a thought but engine noise is a pain above 40mph....

I find that taking out the hearing aid really does improve things on the MGB and I guess it will do the same on the Y when I get it moving!! As we get older we loose the top end of our hearing first so one should stil be able to hear the throaty roar from an enthusiastic XPAG!

If you think a Y type is noisey you should try a T type. Although I am getting a bit hard of hearing I needed ear plugs in the TF with the hood up, and sitting on the floor one really felt the cats eyes. If Mark Strang is in any doubt about his YT he will find it a whole lot more comfortable than his T types with better suspension and far more luggage space for those long trips. One tip I found for the YA was fitting a new type camshaft reduced tappet chatter, and sound insulation panels behind the scuttle, the new type 9 gearbox reduces engine revs added to which it is almost silent, so now I can talk to my passenger at 65mph instead of shouting. Wind noise above 70mph is another problem. Bryan

One other idea is an electric fan, the belt driven fan makes a din it also uses a lot of fuel, and loads the fan belt, it runs too slow at idle to cool the radiator, in short it is rather useless. Get an electric fan and put an added horse power or two on the road where its needed.

When I put in new rubber engine mounts, the noise level subjectively doubled! Those rubbers are way too hard (but they're the only ones you can buy).

Brian- which model of thermostatic fan fits the best. I am going to try some more bulkhead insulation and maybe try n put some sound proofing on the rocker cover. A new type camshaft would be good in the long term.

Thanks for all the comments by the way.

I agree with the comment about being noisier in a T type - it was even noisier last weekend on the Tamar Trial - the rev limiter on our TB failed - we have it set at 7000rpm - so I think we hit about 9000 rpm before the engine said "enough"!!Valve through top of piston. Dave

Im not sure where I purchased the pull fan from [see image] either 'Fit a Part' or 'Vehicle Wiring Products'. It is mounted on top and bottom rails of 1.25" aluminium angle bolted to the radiator frame. The thermostat is off the shelf mounted in a home made housing soft soldered to the header tank, and so non damaging. These come in various switch settings usually stamped on them. V W Products sell an adjustable thermostat which may be better. I have fitted an overide switch and an electric thermometer, also had the radiator re cored, added to which I pressurised the system to 7lbs by fitting an ex MGB pressure tank to the overflow. So far in use the fan has never switched on since the temperature seldom even reaches 98c, only if the engine idles for 6-10 minutes does it reach 100c and switches on, it then runs for about 4 minutes switching off at 95c I hope this helps Bryan
