MG MG Y Type - Out and about

As the weather is fine I decided to take my YB out of hibernation. A pleasant 30 mile drive around rural Oxfordshire. A reminder of things to come.

Ditto...30 miles in morning sun too around Romsey rural up to Stockbridge around the river Test. YT didn't miss a beat. Hopefully sun keep shining more hood down days ahead.

Nice work guys - I look forward to getting my Y out in a couple of weeks. Got to check over a rear axle half shaft oil leak past the gaskets though and cant get to that (nice and easily) until I take my 55 ZA off the hoist and I am waiting on parts coming in from NTG soon. I am too lazy to get on my knees and jack the Y up to do it - why work hard right?

Unfortunately the weather in Warwickshire was overcast so taken out in a Discovery to watch my Rugby Club loose away to Alcester. However, I took the YT out for a 10 mile drive yesterday. Its first outing since a very wet day on January 1st. Needs some work on the carbs and of course still have to sort out the problem with the propshaft fouling the cover. Solutions were outlined and I need to follow those up!

My time has been taken with sorting out the TC. So VW steering box now fitted and replacement brake cylinders. So now steers straight and stops in a straight line. Rather different from a Y in that the Y has a superior steering set up to any TA-TC models. Indeed even with a VW box there is no comparison. Hence the rack and pinion set up on the TD!

Of course the YT has the same set up as the TC with twin SUs although the TC probably has a different cam. Nonetheless both the TC and YT have the same 54BHP.

Having two XPAG engined models mean that these parts are interchangeable. Alsp TC front brake cylinders ate the same as Y Type rear cylinders.

I dont know whether anyone has used a repair kit recently. I fitted one to the front b/c on the TC and had the rear o/s changed at the NEC. Both have subsequently leaked and had to be replaced with new pistons. On the YT the whole brake pipe system has now been replaced with new cylinders fitted all round.

I would be interested to hear of any owners experiences with repair kits. I have also acquired a set of polyurethane bushes to replace on the TC and intend to do the same with the YT. Again any personal experiences with polybushes would be useful.

I am on the Octagon Stand in Hall 3 at Stoneleigh tomorrow. We also have a trade stand in Hall 1.

So I look forward to having a chat with any of you who intend to visit. I will be with the TC.

All the best
Jerry

Last Friday, 17th of February, my YB had the honour of ferrying a bride's parents to the ceremony of their daughter's wedding and then, to the reception. Both venues are in Poole, Dorset. Although only a mile apart, after the wedding we did a tour of Poole, around the Quay and around the town centre, before travelling on to the reception. We followed the bride and groom as they travelled in a magnificent 1939 Buick. A RHD model, in cream, worthy of being an extra in an Al Capone movie.

Magnificent though the Buick was, the little YB was anything but upstaged and the bride's parents thoroughly enjoyed their ride, as well as all the attention from passers by.

The wedding was a very special, yet bittersweet event. The couple are both in their fifties, she's a widow and he is divorced, they have been an item for over 12 years. Just before Christmas, the lady took ill and was admitted to hospital where she was found to have cancer. It's so advanced that she is too poorly for chemo, she doesn't have long.

We enjoy having a large circle of friends, all of whom flocked to the wedding, many of those friends contributed to the event, helping with catering, the entertainment and the myriad of small details that go into making a wedding day memorable. My wife made the bride's wedding dress.

Despite the underlying sadness of the bride's health, we all remained positive, the groom kept his composure as he recalled how they met, how they became part of our social scene and then went on to thank so many contributors. It really was an upbeat day.

Jerry I have found in the past just changing the brake seals sometimes doesn't cure the problem, nearly always a perceptible ring of hardened fluid builds up at the end of piston travel which is the very devil to remove. Bryan

What an uplifting story !! It's amazing how a car as small as a Y Type can make such big impression as a wedding car. I have done a few weddings for friends and family and have found that removing the passenger seat gives the bride plenty of room (the father of the bride and the groom don't matter so much) and the suicide doors gives the photographer a good photo. Ivory and black paint helps as well,

Wonderful story Robert.

Please send in photos of your Y if you use it for a wedding to me and we will publish them, with your story of who, what and when on Ys at Weddings - see www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/weddings.shtml.

Also, if you use your car with the younger generation - http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/youngsters.shtml.

Keep promoting the Y!

Best wishes
