MG MG Y Type - OWL543 & Betty Haig

This is a long shot, but I have to ask ?.

This YA Saloon, registration OWL543 was a factory car loaned to Betty Haig to contest the 1950 Monte Carlo Rally.

Later in 1950 it was acquired by Len Shaw and used for the 1950 Daily Express Rally many more rallies until replaced by another YA in 1952.

Does anyone know the chassis number of OWL543, or suggest any way to find it out after all these years ?.

Does anyone know if the car still exists, or is that registration still current perhaps.

Thanks in anticipation,

Tony Slattery

Tony,

It's not shown as current on the DVLA Website vehicle enquiry page for MG.

You could write to DVLA to see if they can share any information

A letter written from Down Under just might work ?.

I wonder also where are the three YB factory rally cars today - HMO908, HMO909 & HMO910 ?.......

Tony

HMO 909 is currently on loan from the Shaw family to the Gaydon Motor Museum but I have no trace on HMO 908 or 910. Sure would be good to track them down some time too for sure. That would be a great reunion!

I have a feeling the car was passed on to Gregor Grant and was then totalled in an accident (on the RAC Rally?) c1952. Think I read that in Len's book but can't be sure. Certainly Gregor wrecked his YA about then and replaced it with UMG662 which I now own.

Whilst researching the history of UMG662 I found the sale adverts for the other two factory cars. The drivers who bought them off the works when the works switched to ZAs did not keep them long!

I am sure John Lawson researched this years ago and may even have written to various people including Len Shaw.

It would certainly surprise me if I was the first person to enquire about the identity and fate of this car.

I do hope that John Lawson's research can be uncovered and it sheds some light on the questions posed here.

Thanks to everyone for your efforts.

You could write to John Lawson....he is very reclusive and although only a few miles from me I have not seen him for years and he sold his YB in the early 80s..if you e mail me I can give you his address as I think he will reply although he has no internet access or similar.

One of our members bought John Lawson's records from him some time ago. He is on Holiday for 3 weeks at the moment I will check with him on his return.
Our own records are inaccessible at the moment due to serious illness but will be with me soon. We received an email from a Chris cox asking about this recently so we will be checking it out when we can.
