MG MG Y Type - Petrol Cap Vent

Hi Guys,
I am fitting up the fuel filler pipe as the restoration continues, I read with some interest the recent post about fuel cap position & the vent pipe in the filler pipe. Does the fuel cap need to be vented as well? I would think it shoud be as you need to replace the fuel with air as you use the fuel up. I have fitted a new cork seal to my cap & I notice there is a small hole in the centre metal part of the cap. This metal part holds down the cork seal. I assume this hole is the vent? I can't blow through it so I wonder if I should try I make sure it is open to the atmosphere? Any thought much appreciated!! Cheers, Mike.

G'day

You dont say if you are fitting the cork seal to an old cap or a modern repro one but either way dont worry. You are quite right about needing to balance fuel consumption with air so as not to create a vacuum however trust to what you have there and go ahead and fit it as is - dont attempt to modify it by overthinking. If you do you may compromise the design! The seal is there really to prevent spillage on a roll over (hope that you never need it as you have bigger problems if you do!) but the cap should vent OK without modification I think you'll find.

That would be my suggestion too. I cannot remember how it vents but it seems to do it. Does anyone else know?

Hi Guys, Had a look at my fuel cap to check the venting issue. You will see from the attached picture how venting occurs. Although my gasket appears to have been home made sometime in the past, you can see that a section has been cut away from the centre of the gasket which in turn exposes the corresponding hole in the rear plate, which of course vents to the atmosphere. So the problem is solved. Depending on how tight the fit is against the centre bolt I would suspect that a gasket without a cutout section would still allow sufficent venting around the bolt. As fuel is drawn at a very slow rate it would not require much clearance around the bolt for venting to occur. To be on the safe side I would suggest that a small hole be punched adjacent to the hole in the washer. (Now that I have mine pulled appart maybe I should change that awful looking gasket)

Nice picture Terry - makes the situation clear.

Now where can I get a cork seal/gasket?
I don't think my YT has ever had one (since being in my ownership).

Cheers,
Saul.

Thanks everyone for your answers! I have pulled the cap apart again & the hole in the cork gasket wasn't large enough & therefore blocked the hole. With the help of your photo Terry I have now enlarged the hole & all is ok. I purchased the gasket from NTG some time ago & it is a good fit. I think it may also fit "T" Types as well. Anyway, back to the restoration.........
Cheers, Mike.
