MG MG Y Type - Picture of the Month etc.

I've looked very closely at the October picture of the month and I'm not sure that it's a real photograph. The angle of the radiator grille is most peculiar, as is the glass of the r/h headlight and the fountain surround looks a bit dodgy through the rear side window. I think it's been Photoshopped onto the hotel picture, what do you think? Even if it is a fake, it's still a great honour to have a Y Type representing such luxury and opulence.

On the subject of Y Types pictures, I've attached part of a feature in Practical Classics magazine, 'Rust in Peace'.It was taken in the north of Scotland; the caption descibes the wreck in the background as 'unknown'. I think it looks like a Y Type. If it is, does anyone recognise it?

I don't think it is Y type. The shape of the fender is not that of a Y, the side lamp is not the torpedo type and the wheels are vented. Terry

Looks more like a Ford to me. Dave

Sorry Guys - it is a genuine non-artworked photo and it is a Y. I actually spoke several times with the Hotel Management about the photo and confirmed it as a Y. They did promise to send me details of the owner ... but never followed through, hence my request of our Sri Lankan owners to please follow up. I am thinking a visit in person to the desk will engender a much more favorable response than some gorky English guy!

We await contact by someone!! Now if an English guy were to be visiting ... that might also be a different story!

Paul,I thought Peter,s question was about the practical classics photo. That,s what I was talking about! Confusion reigns!Cheers, Dave

I had two questions Dave, one about the Sri Lankan hotel and one about the Practical Classics picture. Paul's answered the first one, but the car I meant in the field was the one in the right background. The one in the foreground is of course a Ford Popular van but the other one has front wings, windscreen and doors like a Y.

The photo from Practical Classics - in the foreground it is definitely a Ford Popular, however the one in the background is probably also not a Y - the battery box is the wrong sort of shape for either a Central or Offset box ... in my opinion.

I also don't think it is a Y; if I'm not mistaken, the front doors are hinged at the front?
Willem van der Veer

I would say it was a Ford Prefect model E93A made 1938 to 1949 (not to be mistaken with the Ford Prefect E493A made between 1948 and 1953)
To view this model range go to Ford Sidevalve Owners Club.

Mal,
I've had a look at the Ford sidevalves and you're right, it's a Prefect and not a Y. I'm finally convinced by the corners of the windscreen surround, much rounder in the Ford Prefect. I thought the front door was a suicide version that had come adrift from the central hinges; you'll notice that the back one's open at its leading edge.
I'll now admit defeat; not one of my proudest posts this one.
Looking at the Ford website I was surprised to see that they had a Y Type too!

Hi Peter

Dont worry about it - it takes a big guy to admit what you have and besides, imagine if you had been right? Please keep looking and spotting - its amazing what you can see out there - witness the current crop of 3 vintage postcards added to the site yesterday! I am sure there are more out there too! Indeed I have just found another I am in the process of buying I hope! More later!
