MG MG Y Type - Pitfalls of Overseas Engine Rebuild

Please find enclosed report on engine you had rebuilt in France by Ray Tutt. I have stripped the engine down at your request and the following are issues found during said strip down.

Firstly lack of oil pressure was caused by a gasket being incorrectly fitted on the oil pump, which blocked the main oil gallery from the pump to oil filter!
While checking for oil delivery to the rocker shaft, it was noted that four of the pushrods were bent one being very bent.
On removal of the cylinder head water was present up several of the head studs and the head gasket was showing signs of failure, the cause of this was I believe two fold. One the thread on the head studs were elongated which would give a false reading when the head nuts were torqued down, secondly the block face was not machined flat, with a straight edge placed on the block there was a 3 thou hollow in the centre of the block.
The pistons were found to be 10 thou above the deck of the block, the maximum allowed on this engine is 2 thou. The problem you would have had is the compression ratio would have been excessive, especially as the head had been skimmed aswell.
On removal of the sump I found a fair amount of debris some of which had found it way into the bearings on the crankshaft and scoured them, none of the oil galleries in the engine had been cleaned out. Camshaft bearings had not been replaced which one would expect, especially with new camshaft fitted.

I would recommend the following remedial work:
1) Double check all component tolerances.
2) Re-skim block face.
3) Remove 15 thou from piston crowns for correct deck height.
4) Fit new cam Bearings.
5) Fit new crank bearings.
6) Fit new timing gears.
7) Fit new pushrods.
8) Fit new head studs and nuts.
9) Clean out all oil galleries.
10) Have Pistons, crank, conrods, flywheel and clutch cover balanced.

Looks horrible. If you are taking legal action (I would) maybe advertising this on "the web" might not be a good idea? If no legal action can be taken, fire away!

It is always a gamble when you put your engine out to someone but I know you did your homework and the original guy you sent it to came "recommended" by someone so you cannot be faulted there. Your experience though does prove a warning to others though in that if you are going to follow a recommendation from someone else, always try and make sure whenever possible that the supplier/vendor is within relatively easy access to you when you are dealing with a complex assembly. It is possible from looking at the nightmare of a re-work list that you wound up with that your rebuild actually made things worse for you than before you had the work carried out which is a horrid place to find ones self in.

Judging by the thoroughness of your new report I hope that this rebuild goes much better and that you get a good engine out of it so that you can get back into enjoying your YB after all your hard work on the car.

Best wishes for a better 2010,

Forgot to also point out why sell something and use photos of something else ie another engine....holding this thought.
Happy christmas and safe (Y)ear for all.

I would sooner fit ANY engine (MG B....) that I could rather than pay a price like that - this is a hobby after all.

Two more from same seller, value for money? Um......

My observation is that neither of them can be a TC or TD engine and a YA at the same time - one was 45BHP the other 54 BHP :)

Also interesting to note they are not XPAGs but recond XPAW/XPAMs.

I wonder how many of your bits are in these??

Have you been able to get out in your YB with your newly reconditioned "reconditioned" engine yet to enjoy it?

And the engine is still over priced.
