MG MG Y Type - Price for a YT

Hi, over from the TD site. I have an opportunity of first buy on a 1949 YT that is being sold by a family acquaintance.

Car was running when it was garaged in 1998 and has been started a couple times a year since. Tires are flat, so I could not drive it, but everything looks good.

Car has an older restoration, but is still in very good condition.

Not sure what the seller is wanting from it but would like to know what the group feels a reasonable price would be.

Car is a right had drive here in the US.

Here is the front.

Bruce,

You have added photo's of engine bay twice. If you go on carandclassic website you will find two YT's and one YA that is converted to YT for sale as examples of current prices to compare.

Both home market and export YT's had twin SU's. The single SU was standard equipment on YA & YB Saloons.

If you can advise the chassis number, you can confirm it is a genuine YT (home or export ?)on the IMGYTR Database.

The photo below shows the YT twin carb setup - just like the TD !.

A good find Bruce - I hope you get the car.

As suggested by Tony Slattery's comments please drop me a note off line with the details of the car. The YT engine should be TWIN carburettors with a different air cleaner set up. It is, however, not unheard of that engines get swapped around and the lower powered (and different cam shaft profile) engine with single carburettor be fitted in as a replacement. At the end of the day though what is of paramount importance Bruce in MG Y ownership, is that the Owner enjoys his car. Our aim at the International MG Y Type Register is to help the owner achieve that goal. I look forward to helping get you sorted and started and will speak in advance of hearing from you about your acquisition of this car that everyone here will look forward to doing the same.

To give you some idea of price one was bought this year in the UK for around £8000 having been advertised for £10,000 a runner but in need of restoration. A top end quality restoration would sell for £30,000 +. Mine is a well used sound runner and has an agreed insurance value of £20,000 possibly a bit low now. Values have shot up over the past 10 years and probably just overtaken TD values. Rarity is the factor that holds their value. If the leather work and wet weather gear are good it helps as these are expensive to replace compared with a TD, other costs would be the same.
Go for it, you won't regret it. When you get the chassis number please let our MGCC Y Reg Registrar know. He may have some history of the car that he could give you now.

Thanks All

I am hoping to get back over to look at the car again and get more details on it.

I did notice the single carb and thought that the YT had dual (Just saw a YA at GOF Central and saw the single carb on it). I will ask the owner about that. I did find a box with various carburetor parts including one complete carb and other parts for another. Brass piston, like I have in my 50 TD, so it probably is for the YT.

Sorry on the picture, I am in an area where I can't get good internet and have to use my phone to connect. Here is the interior.

I will look forward to hearing from you as soon as you get all the details Bruce. Drop me an email off line and I will give you my phone number in Washington State and we can hopefully talk some more.
