MG MG Y Type - Promoting the Y Type

Cracking article in this months Safety Fast, highlighting Marc Hansons Monte exploits. Well done MGCC
D P Jones

Compliments to Marc Hanson and to Safety Fast. Glad to hear at least one MG specialist publication remembers MG's from a certain era. I thumbed through May's MG Enthusiast and put it back in the rack, other than a piece on a TB, there was nothing that interested me. Is that MG snobbery on my part? I don't expect Y Types to appear as often as those models built in greater numbers, but there are a good many models built before the formation of BMC that are of interest, but rarely get an airing.

Robert,
In defence to MGE magazine their Editor Simon Goldsworthy is very supportive of older cars. I take your point there are months when it is more modern models which features, however last year they had a good article on restoration of two YTs in August, they featured an article on my own Ys one month, and have many articles on older models too.

May I make suggestion that you write article around your YB period costumes and many social events you use YB at, your are great ambassador for the Y and would make good article for MGE to feature.

I believe SF magazine varies month to month, however without exception if you look back over the years of magazine it features less technical articles and more focus on reports and events. It's difficult to find articles to fill magazine each month, i know Octagon struggles and has regular request for contributions. The beauty of being Y owner is most information can be found at www.mgytypes.org where new find cars keep growing, four new finds in couple of days I'm happy to report.

Interesting comments about coverage of Ys. Richard is quite correct about the presence of Ys in Safety Fast, which is sporadic to say the least. I am forever banging onto Andy Knott (Editor) and Ian Quarrington (Chairman) about more coverage as the Y scribe Although I like all Registers, get a limited amount of space each month and two Newsletters (June and December). Articles will and do get published and good quality photos are essential.

Enjoying MG, the monthly magazine for the the Owners Club had an excellent article on Peter Arnell's YB in the January issue.

The Bulletin, the MG Octagon CC's, monthly mag has a new Editor (since last November) and he too has been very supportive. Although this is only available for members but there is an online version.

I am hoping that the MGCC Y Register's sponsors for the Round Britain Relay, Stewart Miller and Peter James Insurance, will through their Events Manager spread the news of Y Types far wider than the closed world of MG's. They are distributing information to the wider classic car press and hopefully this will result in a greater appreciation of the Y Type.

If anyone is keen to join the Event which covers 37 stages across England, Scotland and Wales then visit the MGCC Y Register website: www.mgccyregister.co.uk and find out more. Maggie Grafham is the contact and you can find details on the site.

This event, which extends from June 3rd - July 30th 2017 has brought together the Octagon, Owners Club, Car Club in spreading the news about the Y Type. We are keen to see any Y Type appearing and supporting the Event. It doesn't matter whether you belong to a Club or not. This is a unique event which Julian Bosworth a YB owner dreamed up and put in place with the stated aim of bring an event close to owners rather than specific National Events which are not always easy for owners to attend.

Graham Smith, the Natter Coordinator for the Octagon is contacting Area Co-ordinators to ensure those that are active may have the opportunity of using this Event as an awareness raiser in their patch.

Keep on spreading the word!

Thanks for the compliment Richard and I do take your point. The competition you speak of is by electronic entry only and I don't have email, or even know how to send a photo.
That, of course, is my problem, but the cynic in me, and this is not directed at MG Enthusiast per se, is that I see such a competition as a way of garnering personal information by Kelsey Publishing. All those contestants are future junk mail recipients. It's the world we live in, if you think that your store loyalty card is just that I'm afraid it's not so. Everything you buy, when you buy, how you pay, is logged onto a profile for future use. But if you think that I'm an old cynic, how cynical is it of these companies to sell on your details, and that is what they do.

Hi Robert et al,

I echo Richard's comments about Simon Goldsworthy's support of MG Ys. Simon was indeed on the hunt for buying a Y recently but was unsuccessful in finding one in his budget :(!! That said, MGE is very supportive of the IMGYTR and willingly gives us permission to reprint their articles. As you know if you follow our Reprinted Articles page (http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/reprintedarticles.shtml) many of the more recent contributions come from them and Kelsey publishing. Considering they are a private enterprise they do actually feature the MG Y on a regular basis. I still have some of their more recent articles in and amongst the remaining (currently ... but the list keeps growing) 38 articles left in my library to bring to you hungry MG Y Type owners.

I actually have a subscription to MGE and along with The Bulletin and Enjoying MG (as a member of the MGOCC and the MGOC - they both provide excellent benefits for Overseas MG owners worth of the subscriptions BTW) and I regard all three as providing an excellent coverage of our wonderful cars. If you look at the Reprinted Articles page from say 1995 to date, it is actually spectacular just how many articles there are in there currently from just these three sources! Long may this continue, however they (like our website too) are dependent for input and contributions from you the owners. So please keep your contributions coming in to maintain the vibrancy of what is actually YOUR WEBSITE!!

Thank you all for 15 wonderful years: here is to the next 15!

I couldn't help to ask question why the two biggest MG Car Club's fail to promote the Y. Flicking through the pages of April's Enjoy Magazine there is a discussion around house prices and MG models comparison, the MG TC and TD featured, but no comment for Y Types.
I also note on another thread my question about MG Car Club Y Register Car of the year award and got told as I'm non member this is reason I did not get to know winner of car of the year award. Oh well unless you're a member clearly the Y Register feel there is no point in promoting the Y Type. Narrow minded springs to mind, no wonder I chose like many others to not renew my subs!! And then I see the club won some awards

I find this more of a mess than dear old Brexit! LOL. Won on award on the biggest event, that....er was cancelled this year, you couldn't make it up could you.

And in addition I note the MGCC Y Register Facebook page are now going closed shop, seems their strategy is polar opposite of all good marketing strategies to get in as many faces and out there to as wide an audience as possible. To unearth the barn find from an owner knowing little about the car inherited from old sadly departed owner is not going find MG Car Club Register facebook page.

Anyway long live the all inclusive, all useful resource pages of the International MG Y type Register, also feel free to join the MG Y Type Group on Facebook already established and with steady international base of members.

I am sure they have their reasons Richard, however you and everyone else can remain assured that the International MG Y Type Register will continue to maintain our open and free access to all parts of our site, and that (as stated on our home/Welcome page) "Whether you are already enjoying Y Type ownership, or just thinking about it, these pages will have something to offer you. This website is for all Y owners, irrespective of which club you may, or may not, belong to. Its aim and intention is to promote the wider ownership and enjoyment of these wonderful MGs."

So long as we keep on enjoying our cars - we will all be fine :)!

Drive safely out there please. Everyone gets to go home.
