MG MG Y Type - Radial tyres for the YA

I saw an offer at ATS this week for 25% off four tyres plus £40 Sainsbury vouchers for petrol. My local manager thinks it will include the 175/80x16 Taxi radials. including tubes and balancing, and taking in to account the voucher amount the cost would be about £230 for the four.

"Budget" tyres of this size are over £50 each so assuming free fitting, and abouy £10 each for tubes, the ATS deal seems a good one. Offer open until 30 November

Although my Y is now gone, you can see that I still love you all and think of you!

Hi Michael

Your note is very interesting. Does anyone have experience of using radials (175/80 x 16) on a YA?
Certainly the price is very reasonable. I have to get some tyres fitted to my modern so I will pay a visit to my nearest ATS supplier.

Obviously they would need inner tubes and balancing.
Though the price that you have quoted is very competitive. I noted a price of around £50 for a tyre which is still substanially cheaper then cross plies from Vintage Tyre Supplies or for that matter Longstone Tyres.

Anyhow I look forward to anyone who has has used radials and is there anything that makes Taxi Tyres bettr/worse than using conventional cross plies?

Sincerely

Jerry

Thanks for the thought

Taxi tyres are essentialy "van-tyres". Usually their size is stated as 175R16C. The C stands for commercial. Commercial tyres will give a less smooth ride because of their high load-index. They will fit, but would you fit van-tyres to your daily car?

Willem,

Yes I would, in preference to cross plies.

Before I sold my Y I looked at available radials, and most were extremely expensive; I seem to remember a Pirelli Cinturato at around £200 per cover.

OK Michael, point taken. But I seem to remember that your daily driver is of a make that produces lot's of vans and trucks, so maybe they would not look out off place? ;-)

Hi Michael

I went to a local ATS supplier in Stratford on Avon mindful of the deal that you were refering to. No such offer there and they priced up 'Taxi' Tyres at around £119.00 each.

They fitted a pair of Micheins to my Xsara and mentioned that both tyres, which were fitted to the rear were near their minimum tread. Moreover they pointed out that both were more than 5 years old (2003 and 2004 manufacture). Indeed one (2004) was going rotten around the rim! They were fairly sure that they were the originals - the car is an 04 reg. I commented that a mileage of 102,000 was not bad then!!

The moral from this tale is to ensure that your tyres are ok. Those which may have been stored for some years could superficially look ok -good tread etc, but they may not be as safe as you might think.

The answer is to fit a new set of tyres, when those that are on your car are more than 10 years old ( or perhaps earlier). It has been said before but well worthwhile repeating.

So when I finally get my YT (next week now!)then I may have to change the tyres anyway. Though they will end up being cross plies!

Sincerely

Jerry
