MG MG Y Type - Radiator Mounting

Can any one please tell me the arrangement of spacers etc. between the bottom of the radiator and the radiator bracket attached to the front extension? In the bag of nuts, bolts and washers that I stored before taking the radiator off is a motley assortment of washers and rubber pads, I've forgotten which goes where.

From memory I'd say, from top to bottom:
- A big rubber spacer under the radiator, on top of the mountingbar.
- A big rubber spacer under the mountingbar.
- A steel washer.
- A self locking nut.

Maybe somebody can correct or add this list.

Rather than a locknut, I have most often found 2 nuts locked against each other as original.

The radiator needs a "soft" mounting, so don't do the nuts up too tight against the rubber pads.

Willem is correct with the sequence of rubber pads and the large washer.

If you are re-assembling the car after a complete strip down, I suggest you do not tighten the mounting bar to the chassis - you might need to adjust this to get the bonnet & grille surround alignment.

Many thanks to you both for your advice. I have found and sent for from NTG a complete mounting set.

In the bag with the nuts & bolts & washers and rubber pads there are also a pair of large " penny washers", 3/8" full nuts and two 3/8" half nuts exactly as Tony described, plus a number of 3/4" bore washers.

Now prior to taking the radiator off last year, (c.f. "oil in water saga") the chrome grill - bonnet - body alignment was good.

The rubber pads were replaced by me some 20 years ago and are are cut from 1/2" thick rubber sheet and are in good condition, but with them fitted, the radiator bottom outlet and the drain tap foul against the upstand on the cross member so maybe the correct ones will resolve that problem.

Many thanks

Dave you may find this work sheet on our site useful when refitting as your new Rad mountings will alter the bonnet fitting.

Hello,
just arrived, rubber radiator mounts from NTG listed as :- Mounting set Radiator R819S Applicable to : T series Y series.

These are 8mm or so thick, by 37.5mm o/d and 18mm bore with an aluminium outer ring.

They look way too thin, are they correct?
