MG MG Y Type - Rejoice with me

Just in time for the summer season, I have finally got my Y back from the garage. Rebuilt engine, new clutch, new dynamo, new regulator and several other bits and pieces. It runs really well - and so it should for the price! All financial contributions gratefully received!

And now - the end of the stainless steel muffler has split! Suppliers???

Also, I have discovered that I am running 16" on the front and 15" on the rear. Any thoughts on that combination?
Murray

Try NTG or the MG Octagon Car Club - both do the Y muffler/silencer. It is longer than the TD one so dont be tempted to fit one of those.

As to the wheels, you have a YA right? I would try to get back on all 16" as the handling will be improved. There is one 16" wheel on eBay currently http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MG-Y-type-One-used-wheel-16-as-fitted-to-MG-YA-YT_W0QQitemZ360027444700QQihZ023QQcategoryZ27380QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem and another is bound to come along ... in 6 months! Again though, try the MG Octagon Car Club - if you dont already get the Bulletin it is worth joining the MGOCC as well as the MGCC - you will get a discount on the silencer that will pay for your first year membership, but from memory there is a guy in there who has a Y that he is breaking.

As for your 15 in ch wheels, there is a guy on the classified Ads at www.mgytypes.org who is urgently seeking 1, but you may be able to do him a deal on 2 with tyres.

What is your spare? 15 or 16?

Until you get two though, keep matched axles. You will be OK but not perfect in terms of handling.

Congratulations on getting the car on the road.

What kind of back axle do you have: are you sure that the 16" front wheels fit on the studs of the rear axle?

If you have 15" wheels with the YA stud pattern several people around the globe are interested from which car they came....

The (Dutch) eBay seller mentioned by Paul must have more wheels. If neccesary I know a German who has wheels (and reads this forum?)

Another good source for the wheels is Mark McGuire (I think I got his last name right). He is in South Wales and seems to be able to get MG Y stuff - email is blackdog.blackdog@virgin.net.

I leapt to an erroneous conclusion when I noticed that the circular things in the wheel arches were different sizes. It is not the wheels, they are all 16", it is the tyres. Front: 5.75-6.0 x 16. Rear: 5.25 x 16. According to the book 5.25 x 16 is the correct size. The front tyres have the word "Taxi" written on them.

I have a spare 16" in my garage maybe 2off I will look tomorrow. I have so much junk I'm not sure whats in the roof space
Bryan

I had a quick look and counted 3 up there so you can certainly have one but will have to think about letting the other go. The consideration is if you have a YB axle, fitting 16" will give a really good cruising performance if the studs can take it.
Bryan

Thanks Bryan, but I have a full compliment of 16" wheels, just a strange tyre arrangement.

Hi Murray

It would appear that you have yourself sorted. However, if you go to the Classified Ads page on the Y Type website you will find that a guy called Ray Cotter has a set of five wheels and part worn tyres.

They should be good as he has just changed the wheels to wires and fitted YB axles etc - it does look very good.

The point is the tyre/wheels for sale have been recently used. Frankly I would be very wary about using old tyres that may have a good tread but have not been used for years as the walls can perish quite badly.

Bite the bullet and buy a set of new tyres. Longstone are competitive and will deliver the next day. Garages may charge you around a fiver to fit them.

Give it a thought and if you are interested in contacting Ray his details are thus:

He lives in Worcestershire and his contact nos are 01905 776341 and 07905344131 (Mobile).

Hope this may be of help.Good to see that you are booked in for the Spring Y Weekend - look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely

Jerry

I would recommend that you try to get all 5.25 X 16s if at all possible.
