MG MG Y Type - Removing Y-Type Petrol Tank

Can the petrol tank of a Y-Type be removed without raising the body off the chassis? When checking the inside of the tank with a swan-neck inspection camera, it looked very clean with a hint of rust that would not justify to replace the bottom.
However, I was not able to reach any filter-arrangement that might be sitting at the bottom of the suction pipe. Thus it might occur, that when I start the engine after 30 years restoring the car, the filter might be obstructed and the tank needs to be removed after all and cleaned and treated on the inside.

Anton

Yes it can. I have done a couple without moving the body off the chassis. It is a bit of a wiggle and jiggle exercise to wrangle it out, but it can be done.

Once out use Moss's tank cleaning and sealing stuff - http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/fuel-tank-cleaner-sealer.html

I just couldn't get mine out without taking about a half inch off the filling tube. the rubber connector tube is plenty long enough to refit.

Dear Anton

Yes it can indeed.
But I experienced difficulties with the piece
of threaded bar looking towards the rear of the car. There was just not enough space to get the tank down, so I had to cut the mentioned piece off.

Sorry to say that the new replacement tank did not excatly match with the bolt holes on the chassis.

Peter and Andy, thank you.

I will cut off half an inch from the petrol filling tube, before replacing the body.

Anton,

My advice would be check your pipe for fit first, just because one pipe needed half inch off does not mean yours will be the same, take the various bonnet sizes they are all different lengths being hand built, same could apply to the pipe. Obviously if you don't check it first and it's cut, it's too late, sorry if this is sounding like it is teaching you to suck eggs.

I am with Richard on this - do not cut the filler pipe until you have tried to get it in. It is a tough fit to wrangle it in, but it does go as made. Much easier to do on a hoist than lying on your back under the car though too!

OK, I'll be careful about the cutting.
The only thing being, that now, with the body off, its much easier than when everything is in place - and as Peter says, 1/2" is easily made up by the rubber connector tube.

It is easier to cut off than to cut it back on Anton. I would stongly advise against that until after you have tried for several hours to get it in. I have gotten these tanks in with using minimal operating clearances under the car before as well as working using a hoist. It is tricky but they DO go in when you hit that sweet angle. With the body off you should have no problem so again, don't cut.
