MG MG Y Type - Retro fit YA w/s wiper to YT

Being a TF owner I have never had to deal with the TC/TD/YT wiper motor as a potential life threatening device to a passenger under severe breaking when seat belts are not fitted - until my wife, Denny, bought her YT this time last year.

The thread is this. Has any YT owner thought about fitting a TF/YA/YB (maybe Z Magnette) under the scuttle wiper motor and apparatus to a YT?

I thought I'd ask the question here before doing any practical research on the YT in question which could end up being a waste of time if someone else has been through this exercise.

The reasons for such a conversion are safety and having a better system when needed. We do drive this YT in all weathers and will be going on longer rallies in the future.

I haven't had much joy with the product you apply to the windscreen for fast removal of the water in a flat manner rather than streams or streaks!

Looking forward to some responses.

Doubt it could be done Rob. The arms would have to be secured to the scuttle top as a firm surface and then go through 90 degrees onto the screen.

Your passenger could wear a crash helmet and that would be safer? :-)!

Seriously a second, you do have a valid concern, but I cannot really see how you could do it.

I would think that with some fiddling that a set of MGA-MGB wipers could be fitted. What would have to be done is change the bottom angle on the chrome fittings beneath the arm. With that cable driven set up you could easily find a location for the motor. I intend to do the same on my YA when I get it finished. It is a severely rusted body that I am in the process of converting to a Reinbolt and Christie type car with wind up windows, two doors and convertible top.

I've no experience of YTs but if the wipers are as good as YAs, synchronous movement of all components only indicates life, not any likelihood of efficient screen clearing. If you threw it away, you would reduce the vehicle weight and improve acceleration !

Seriously, suggest you try the hydrophobic jungle juice again. I use Rain-X and haven't turned the wipers on for over a year.

I use it all year round and whilst I try to avoid rain in deference to it's 54 year old rust, I bet it gets wet more than yours in sunny Australia.

Keep on trYing.

I don't see, why the TF arrangement should not work. The TF has exactly the same prerequisites as the YT (i.e. folding-down windscreen)

Remember, the first convertible Y, made by Reinbolt & Christie, had scuttle-mounted wipers

The R&C car had a fixed windscreen though in the frame of the saloon / sedan. This would have made the fitting of the saloon / sedan arrangement very easy too.
