MG MG Y Type - Rewiring a YA-advice needed.

I am seriously thinking of having my YA rewired as I had a dead short a couple of weeks ago, and the wiring has definitely seen better days.

I am too old to fancy grovelling under it and I don't have access to a lift so I shall likely pay someone to do it. I have the wiring diagram for them, and the leaflet on rewiring from Y-type regalia sales and can get a new loom in the correct colours.

What else will they want that an experienced auto mechanic would not have?

I can see that a new bulkhead grommet is needed and that Y-type Regalia do not presently have stock. Will an ordinary grommet do? If so what is the tubular extension on the original for?

I understand that the clips that hold the loom to the chassis are the devil to remove. Does this mean that new ones will be needed, if so,from where? Moss and NTG do not seem to show them.

All advice will be gladly received.

Micheal,
I am currently going through exactly the same as you and am in the process of rewiring a Y type. Luckily, (and depending on how you view this), my car is in bits all over the garage floor so I can easily get to all those awkward corners, 'and clips', without the use of a ramp, and I have just replaced those self same clips.
Both Moss and NTG sell these chassis clips and I have obtained these from both. However, the Moss and NTG clips do differ. THe Moss ones are ideal for the brake pipes, fuel line etc and the part that 'holds' is smaller than on the NTG clip. The NTG clips have a larger holding capacity and are ideal for the wiring harness, the pipes however would be loose in these without wrapping something around them first. I only wish that I had found this out before I used brute force and ignorance in inserting the new wiring harness into the smaller Moss clips thinking that they must be right and must fit!!!. At least I know for the next time.
I will add that the clips are about £3 each plus VAT and quite a few are needed, if I remember correctly there are between 30-40 on the car for all purposes, so replacement does come at a cost as I have found out.
Hope this helps.

Regards,
Neil.

Hi Michael,
Two months ago I faced your shortcircuited dilemma and finally bit the bullet in installing the loom I bought very cheaply for Tim Griggs some years ago.

Being colourblind I was VERY lucky for Tim having labelled every single wire in advance, with the colour(s) and destination written on it! Something I would advice you also to do, and you can do that yourself. Like Tim use sturdy labels that you staple along the wire so that it can take some abuse whilst handling the loom.

It took me at least 30 hours to fit the loom, because of the @#%^&*-clips you already mentioned, and understanding/correcting/incorperating the PO's modifications. I sort of ended up with an EXU YB variant in late YA colours...... What took up an enormous amount of time is cleaning and preparing all the contacts and parts you handle. You should also consider soldering all the loose wires in advance for best contact, I didn't and was sorry for that. If not already in the new loom, fabricate extra chassis-mounted earthing for head- and sidelamps.

Take care to buy the right loom, f.i. the YB has different colours. If you're feeling extravagant, chart all the modifications that every 50 year old car has and let the maker include them in the loom. You can also consider adding an extra fusebox and relays on strategic places.

Two months ago I would have offered my services gladly as a form of holiday, but after finishing my loom it will be a long time before I tackle another!!

Michael,
I used companies such as AES (AUTO Electrical Supplies)for a lot of my clips etc when I fitted a new loom during my restoration. They are far cheaper and have a better selection than NTG or Moss. Hope this helps

If you go to the Links page there is a link there to Autosparks.

I have personally had 4 looms (for different cars) from them, and they are not only the correct colours, but you can also go for a cotton overbraid over the plastic in the correct configuration to be 100% correct, and then have a black with white fleck cotton outer cover too. Excellent kit and I have always been highly delighted with the service from Autosparks. When I need a 5th loom there is no second option as far as I am concerned.

You also asked about the grommet. Fitting something is essential as the loom will cut through if left hanging in the hole. The neck merely provides a convenient distance piece.

As to supply, we are looking at getting these remade, however it is a very difficult shape. We are currently in discussions with a vendor - in Australia though.
