MG MG Y Type - Road Wheel Colours for a YT

Dear All

I am about to repaint the wheels on my YT. The car is red as are the wheels. I do find that having the wheels the same colour as the body is visually 'heavy'.

I have consulted Lawrence's 'Let there be Y's' who discusses this in Chapter 13, Para g, page 213. In which he mentions that 'unlike the saloons, the wheels on the YT were not finished in body colour.

I have thought of two possibilities either 'sequoia/ivory' or silver. I do have a can of Rover Old English White, which I might try but this is not as cream as the 'ivory'. Have any of you guys any idea of how 'ivory' is marketed in the UK in the Duplicolour/Halfords range please?

I sense that ivory may contrast quite well against the red body. Any example that any of you can refer me to would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Like this colour ?

The correct colour is Sequoia Ivory - but any Cream will do - Silver or White does not look right.

If you go to the Technical Centre at http://www.mgytypes.org and select Color Schemes, then select Paint Formula you will be able to get the PPG Paint formula to take to your local PPG store.

Depending on how legislation has developed in the UK you, as an individual may or may not be able to buy formulated paint over the counter and so you may need to get a buddy with a business to buy it for you.

For most things, the answer is on http://www.mgytypes.org.

Thanks Tony

The pic is very useful and I think that I agree with you in your posting that silver or white does not look correct - especially white.

Am I correct in thinking that post war Morris Minors all had cream painted wheels - Sequoia Ivory perhaps?

Thanks for your reference as well Paul.

I feel that the cream with the wheel embellishers all help to offset the 'visual heaviness' that I referred to.

Much appreciated.

Sincerely

Many MM's between 1960 and 1970 did indeed have cream coloured wheels, though these were Old English White which is not quite the same as Sequoia Cream or ivory.

The TA that I used to own was painted OEW and that is notably lighter than the cream finish to TC's - those colours were probably Seq.Cream as they were on the production line with YT's.

I think I've answered my own question but thanks for your help guys!

All the best

Jerry, you could always put white wall tires back on - LOL!

Take care
