MG MG Y Type - Robber Bits

Reaching a point where I am actually thinking about putting Kathy's YB back together. The body shop is still taking their sweet old time, but getting closer.

I have not noticed any rubber pads that might fit under the rear boot hinges. Is this because there are none???
Floyd Inman

Floyd,
I don't think there were any originaly, but I cut ones to fit on my YT.
Just be careful to tighten them down evenly so as not to distort the sheet metal.
Good luck in the project, or is it more of a career?

As a reference, the Illustrated List of Service Parts for the Y and YT (dated 1951) does not show any rubber pads of any kind associated with the Hinges under "Trunk Lid Details". It does show "Rubber channel for trunk opening" one at 34" and one at 62 ". Based on this it appears that none was used originally.

I have a recolection that when I first took my YT apart some 30 years ago the boot hinges had a
disintegrated paper or thin cardboard gasket. In any event I replaced it with a thin rubber one and the
last time around with a 1/16 or 1/32 neoprene gasket .It seems to make sense although David Lawrence
makes no reference to a gasket. It may be too insignificant for either the Service Parts List or David
but the Boot Lid Handle also has a thin cardboard gasket.
Terry O'Brien

I can endorse Terr's comments about the original "gasket" being thin card of some kind - I took my car (Y6814) apart in 1978 and this material, or the remnants of it, was there. When putting the body together again we used very thin rubber to absorb any slight distortions and improve appearance. Also did this under the boot badge, which avoids any paint damage. Hope this helps, Floyd.

Hi Floyd

I can confirm that the boot (O.K 'Trunk' in Yank!) hinges had gasket card under them as did the boot handle and door handles.
