MG MG Y Type - Salt and Pepper material

When I got my Canadian YT it came with two very original sets of side screens, complete with original salt and pepper material. Does anyone know where I can get this now as I would like to rebuild my weather equipment using original material ... if I can. I am attaching a picture so that you can see what it looks like.

Paul R Barrow

Hi Paul,
I was talking to the PO of YT3861 which had a Salt & Pepper Hood fitted in 2002. The material was imported from the USA via the following supplier:-

Good Luck

Hi Tony

Does he have the invoice with the material reference number on it please? If so, can you please advise what it is for me?

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,
Unfortunately, no reference numbers or clues to source - he just ordered Salt & Pepper Grey Hood Material.

But as it was sourced in the USA, I thought you should perhaps begin your search closer to home rather than pay for two freight crossings of the Pacific.

Check out the website though, they have lots of sample pictures.

cheers

Hi TOny

Contacted them through their website and they have already replied so I have asked them prices etc. Watch this space for more developments! Thanks

OK I am about to order the material. As I cannot get it in the US I am having to import it from Australia so I'd prefer (like Goldilocks) to get the right amount - not too much, and not too little as it will cost a fortune in transit as it is!

Does any one have any idea how much material I will need from having made up a full set of YT weather equipment before?

I want to make a hood cover, hood, 1/2 tonneau, and full set of side screens.

I am thinking about 9 meters (29ft 6ins) and the material is 54 inches wide.

Thanks

Paul

I am reactivating this thread, as I am unsure if the Salt and Pepper Stayfast Hood material listed on the http://www.classicbritishgerman.com.au See photo supplied by the company today.

Is correct for our YTs? It appears different to that shown in Paul's post which seems to have more white and grey in it, or is just the light.

cheers Stuart

You can always wish for "original material", but if no supply remains you have to settle for what you can get.

The alternative is to spend a large amount of money for a manufacturer to produce a quantity of material just for you. Then you have to sell what you don't need to recover your costs. I wish you luck.

Keep searching

Tony, can you please post a close up photo of your hood material, so I can compare with Pauls image at the start of the tread and so I have an idea of what to look for.

It's the same as your photo in the posting from 29th July, although a bit faded now as it's nearly 20 years old.

Tony, thank you for that advice. I will see what the cost is and determne how I proceed.

When I had my YT upholstery done in the early 90’s I bought my salt and pepper hood material from a company in Sydney by the name of Nolan O’Rouke...from memory. https://www.nolans.com.au/timelinr/2009-2/
I’m interested in buying more to do a half tonneau cover as was available to the YT in the day.

Steven Koster

Steven, thank you for the advice on another supplier of similar material. When I compare the 2, I think the Nolan O’Rouke one you used looks better.

I will drop into my Upholster on Monday and see what he thinks of the 2 and if they are still available.

If he doesn't deal with Nolan O’Rouke, I will drive the 30km up the M1 to their Brisbane store/outlet.

Neil Coombes in the UK was looking into getting a batch of the original pattern made but I have not been able to contact him of late.

Hi all

After visiting the Upholsterer, I have decided on a Stayfast pepper / black material for the hood, half tonneau and hood cover.

Tomorrow I will take the YT to the upholsterer so he can work out how much material to order, which I think will be from the US, due to COVID business closurers in Victoria where the other possible supplier is located.

On checking my hood attachments, I have a couple of questions.
1. Page 148 of LTBYs show the position of LTDs and bolts. However, over the years my YT appears to have had various Hoods attached and has multiple holes drilled along the rear edge. Can some one measure and advise the distances from the centre LTD 8 to bolts 9, 10, 11 and 12.

2. On my YT the hood hinge pins are different distances back from the door edges 8" on left and 8 1/2" on right (as per photo).

cheers Stuart

Stuart, I will take some measurements in the next couple of days.
Tony Slattery shared a link on another site of 11mtrs of salt and pepper hood material for sale in Australia.

Steven Koster

Stuart, hope these help if you need better measurements let me know. The LTD sizes are in millimeters the hood frame pivot positions are in inches, all sizes are as close as I could see.
My hood frame pivot position is out half inch as well by the looks of it.

Hi My yt4319 is a body shell at the moment , the left measures 8.5 inches and the right 9 inches. The joys of old cars......
Bob Wood

Thank you Steven and Bob for your measurements, we all have the right hood pin 1/2" further to the rear than the left hand pin. I suppose it doesn't matter as long as the hood frame fits correctly.

Steven, concerning the rear hood attachment measurements. Looking at your measurements it would appear your hood frame spacing straps are only held to the body by one bolt, as no 2 positions are closer than 2" (50mm) apart - the width of the straps.

I checked my YT and found I have an extra 2 holes each side between positions 3 & 8 and 8 & 13 (ie 6 instead of 4) and when comparing my YT bolt hole positions against those provided by Steven, they only agree with Steven's positions 4, 6, 10 and 12.

Could others please check and provide some measurements for bolt and LTD holes between 8 and 3 & 13, measuring out from position 8.

If I am going to get a new hood made I might as well get how it the hood attached correct.

TIA
Stuart

Stuart Duncan

Stuart, I have rechecked my earlier measurements, this time without the hood clipped down, the only changes were between 1-4 and 12-15, all these sizes are with a tape measure so there will be slight variants sorry.
The hood attachment strips are the same spacing between the LTD on both sides, from #3 LTD 40mm then 33mm then 45mm to #4 LTD. From #12 LTD 45mm then 33mm then 40mm to #13 LTD.

Steven Koster

Steven, again thank you for measurement and photo of hood strap attachment.

I tried to email you on the address shown, but ozemail addresses no longer exist. I can be contacted at lesley (underscore) stuart (at) bigpond (dot) com.

I gather from your photo and measurements that you are using LTDs for the 15 positions and then attaching your hood straps with additional bolts.

I may be wrong, but I read the diagram in the LTBYs as the 15 holes include the hood strap bolt positions, and only the centre hole, the holes immeadiately outward of the hood strap bolt holes and the end holes are the only ones with LTDs.

Both your and my YT’s, 2nd (200mm (8”)) and 4th (395mm (16”)) holes out from the centre correspond as do all the holes outwards from the hood straps. Also, our hood strap bolt holes are in similar positions.

Where our bolts differ is with the 1st and 3rd holes positions. My 1st and 3rd holes are about 63 mm (2 ½”) either side from the 2nd holes from centre, whereas yours are around 100mm (4") either side.

Measurements from a few others to clarify bolt hole / LTDs positions would be appreciated.

Stuart

Stuart, my email address is missing (dot) au at the end, I can’t change it in my profile settings.
When I had my upholstery/hood done in the early 90’s we just used the remains of what was left of the old hood as a guide. Those days I don’t think LTBY was published otherwise I would have followed it’s descriptions.

Here is a sample of the material that Ron Taylor has to sell, taken on the hood of YT3861 that was done about 20 years ago.

I have included a paperclip, so show the grain size as best I can.

The fabric is the same quality, and the hood on YT3861 has done around 40,000miles since 2007.

"Safety Fast" everyone in Covid Times,

Tony

A L SLATTERY

For those interested in the hood material, Ron can be contacted via FB through the IMGYTR FB Page - see the post about the hood material.

Sorry people but I have just spoken with Ron and agreed to purchase all 11 meters. It is double duck, grey one side and tan on the other. I intend to have a Hood & side screens, full & half tonneau and hood cover all made from the the material. I know the YT did not come with a full tonneau, but I want something to cover the full inside of the car when hood is down, an extra deterent to theft of items lying in car.

Stuart
Stuart Duncan

The following 2 photos show the comparison between my old hood and the Ron Taylor material.

Materials look and feel the same, so I doubt my old hood is original, but probable made at least 30 years ago, as the car has been off the road since the mid 1990s.

As I am still painting, etc the hood frame, I will go to the upholserer next week to see if he is willing to make a hood from this material and when he can fit the YT in for a new hood.

cheers
Stuart
