MG MG Y Type - Seat Belts - update

Since the recent postings about fitting seat belts in a Y type was discussed recently on the bulletin board I have located a company that fits belts to classic cars. They can be found at

http://www.auto-safe.co.uk/

I have spoken to one of the technical people there and he is willing to look at a Y type and advise on how they would fit belts. If anyone lives in the London area and would take their Y round there maybe we could find out how and how much - they think about £200-£250 max for fitting two 3 point inertia reel seat belts - this includes welding brackets etc - so how about someone willing to show them a Y and get a proper quote etc. The contact to ask for is Peter Sesay and as they fit during the day ring about 3 pm.
They can advise on the best place to fit the manufactured mounting points as well and have experience of fiting belts to old cars.

Now I really wonder how they will solve the problem of the pillar position being AHEAD of the front seats !

I think that anyone who fits seat belts should be aware that they cannot provide the protection of those fitted to a modern car. In an event of a severe collision it is possible the car would not remain intact. I fitted belts to my YA in the 1960s knowing of these limitations to passenger safety. One must consider however that full braking may subject the occupants to 1g deceleration so that the front passenger would be thrown against the dash board with possible head injuries, lap and shoulder belt would help to restrain them. If the car was to slide off the road and turn over seat belts would prevent the occupants from being thrown out of the car. These situations are all low g impact, I consider even the simplest belt installations are far better than none. Bryan Mellem

Hi Bryan you had the trafficator still working after welding the upper b collumn plate?
i understand that i should fix the plate 200mm above the middle of the b-collumn

I discarded the trafficators before fitting the top mounting. At that time my YA was my main every day car, and I realised that most motorists were only aware of flashing indicators. Anyway my cars trafficators were worn out and replacements hard to find, in fact all Y type and most T type spares had dried up - that is why I fitted Ford bumpers which are still on the car today - my car was a patchwork of adapted parts.
