MG MG Y Type - Seat Rails

Dear all
Has anyone out there got a pair of "decent" seat rails for the drivers side of a Y-type? If so, please make me an offer.
Kind regards
Anton Piller

Are they different from the passenger side?

The YT has different passenger ones to the Y and YB, but the Y/YB are the same passenger and driver side.

I often wonder how the seat rails/seat bolts would stand up to a crash in a Y type and if some sort of strengthening would be needed if say seat belts were fitted ?

Interesting point. If seat belts are fitted in the manner suggested by the contributor to the Hints and Tips page, probably they would stand up reasonably well as the strain would be taken out by the correct mounting points. Alternately though if they are incorrectly fitted then it would be like not having seat belts fitted at all ... and therefore academic as there would be much more to worry about!

Given the fact that Y seats have a habit of failing on the welds that hold them together (I think we weigh more than the average 1950 person!!) I think maybe the seat would give way before the rails tore or the bolts (especially the new ones available from http://www.mgccyregister.com/node/32) failed.

Dont suppose you are volunteering your car for cash testing though!

Paul, a cash test wouldn't do much harm would it?

To my knowlede the seat rails on a YTs drivers side are the same as on a Y&YB. However, on the passengers side the difference to Ys&YBs is, that the seat does not slide, but is hinged at the front and can be tilted forward, in order to allow passengers to get to the rear seats.
So, one pair (two only) of Y&YB seat rails would be sufficient.

Hi All,

I wonder if anyone of you has the correct dimensions of the seat bolts at hand?

If so could you please post them here?

Thank you in advance!

No need for the dimensions as new ones available from http://www.mgccyregister.com/node/32. They are the first item under Restoration Parts.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270649795063&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en is for 3 pairs.

I will attempt to get these, and then you can have a pair from them. So lets not get into a bidding war on them!

Another pair I will use to see about remanufacture, and the third can go into the parts cave for anyone else who wants one.

Hi Paul,

thank you for the hint - but they are just zinc coated.

My favourite for such exposed screws ist stainless steel, I have a wide range of allen head s/s screws around and a lathe handy.....

Each to their own Manfred. They are hardly what I woud term "exposed" as one pair is up against the gear box tunnel and one pair is only visible to a two year old or someone on their hands and knees ... in which case if they went everso slightly rusty and they complained then they deserve what they can see - LOL.

For the money, I would buy (and indeed have bought) the zinc-plated ones and just replace them if they corroded - heck the original ones did and much faster! These are vastly superior in my opinion.

Paul

Good scheme, that you go for the rails (without abidding war) and let me have a pair of them.

Best, Anton
Anton Piller

You've got it Anton. I will see what I can do for you and in the event I win, I will send you yours FOC.

Does anyone want a third pair FOC too? Email me off line if you do.

Well, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270649795063&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en went down to me, and as before, one pair will be used for potential remanufacture of these.

A second pair will be going to Anton, but is there any one else out there who needs a pair?

These will be passed on at 1/3 of my cost plus on-shipping from the US.

First come, first served.

Paul

Paul Barrow

The second and third pair are now both allocated, thank you.

It is clear though that there is a demand for these so the first pair will be used to try to remanufacture these parts.

I will announce more as progress takes place on this.

Where else do you get great service like this. Well done Paul

Just been reviewing the back issues of the BBS, as been busy up till now, excellent service again, though not sure you should talk too much about not bidding against one another seem to recall there was thing about bidders colluding, hey not sure, but sure it goes on, but wouldn't post it here, just a thought for future!
