MG MG Y Type - Seat runner bolts

The upside down round head bolts that support the seat and slide in the runners....do they have spring washers below the nut on top and how tight or loose should the nut be as if its too tight it stops the seat sliding...so presume you don't tighten them too much. ..incidentally the new brass inserts the seat sits on were not quite accurate as I had to elongate the hole a little bit to get the catch to operate correctly. Having owned the car for 35 years (we were both in our 20s then) you would think I would have known this but I never did sort it out consistently and having just had my seats recovered in new leather I decided to do it properly!

Hi Dave

Nothing extra needed - use as is straight from the bag. Tightness is a Goldilocks fit - not too tight, not too loose. How tight? I think I used a penny as a gap gauge.

Find a suitable screwdriver and push it in the end of the runner until it wedges under the bolt head. You can then adjust the nylock nut to a loose fit so that the seat slides without rattleing. Or use a double lock nut spring washers are a no no.

Many thanks for all the advice...amazing what you can still learn after years of ownership.

A bit off topic, but need information on the driver's seat runners.

I have purchased two old front driver's seats from Tony Slattery for fitting in my YT restoration project at sometime in the future. In the mean time, I will continue to use the non MGY seats, but with more substantial attachments. When purchased my YT's seat's hinge/attachments were just electrical conduct saddles on the front frame bolted to the chipboard floor (see attached photo).

Floor is now 9mm marine plywood, painted with bituminous paint.

I have used a modified version of A Piller's diagram for the passenger seat hinge runner, to get a couple of steel templates laser cut. (cost $11 ea) I will be welding (a substantial saddle over the front frame) to the runner.

I have checked various sources but the only diagram I can find of the Drivers seat runners is the floorboard diagram in LTBYs. Does anyone have more accurate dimensions and/or a diagram or close up photo which will help with designing some drivers seat runners. Otherwise, I will just make the drivers seat hinged like the passengers seat.

There has been much discussion over the years about remaking the Y Type adjustable seat floor runners. The late David Pelham was investigating these at the time of his death however the cost was going to be substantial to make a press tool for them compared to the demand.

A second option of laser cutting a formed piece of metal was also dismissed on the basis of the capital outlay for both formed and laser cutting.

I think Neil Coombes (UK Representative for the International MG Y Type Register) has done some further work on this since David's passing and I will ask him about this to see what the latest news is.

Failing that, your only hope is to find someone who has a set from a wrecker/parts car such as Tony Slattery. I used to have a pair and may still indeed have them if you are interested in acquiring them, please let me know offline.

Not that far away in Ipswich.

My main reason for getting diagrams or photos of the driver’s seat runners, was so I could use the same bolt pattern through the floor on the seat hinge base I am getting made for the non MG Y seats currently in the car.

Rob, many thanks for your offer. I have sent you an email.

cheers
