MG MG Y Type - Side screen fitting

Hay all, I am attempting to fit side screens to the "Y" and cannot find any close up images of properly fitted side screens. Can some one point me in the right direction? Better yet, can some one post pictures of proper fitted screens, both in and out? Thanks, Tom

( I am fitting frames and fabric supplied by a well known supplier in England. )

I take it that you refer to a Y/T and that you have a decent set of chromed trim strips?! Check page 213 of "Let there be Ys", Dave Lawrence's Super-Book.

Thomas,
Our YT has a hood and side screens that were restored from an original pattern. In a couple of weeks a friend is having new hood and side screens made for her YT using my YT as a pattern, so I can send you some photos if you are not in a rush of stripped frames prior to covers fitted ?.

Cheers

And another photo - note the zip out rear window in the hood. Very nice to have on hot days driving !.

Hey all, Anton, yes, I am talking a YT. The chrome(?) strips from NTG do not come with 45 degree "corners", they are cut square. I guess one has to nip them a bit? But how!

Tony-THANKS for the images, what a nice fit you have! My "Y" has snaps along the rear, not "Lift the dot" fasteners as you have.

It seems that the rear frames fit okay, but the new fabric cannot be centered on the stitching to meet the frames and cover the "opening". Has anyone out in cyber land had this issue? Be well, Tom

Thomas,
I will get some close up photos today in between the showers to see how the stitching is done on the side screens.

And yes, you have to trim the corners of the cover strips.

Cheers

You have to cut the angles with a fine hack saw - not all are 45°. In addition, the top strip of the rear window has to be "bent" slightly. I made up a simple jig to acomplish this task (see attachment).

Tony
To my knowledge there should not be any Lift the Dots fasteners - just "double long" Lift the Dot pegs that prodrude the hood material to secure the half-tonneau. Check "Let there be Ys" pages 143, 149, 150.

Hi All,

I have had a set of sidescreen covers and strips obtained from NTG for a couple of years now. I have now sandblasted and fettled the sidescreen frames ready for painting. So I had similar questions to Tom from 2017 and appreciate the answers provided at the time.
I have tried to make the lower part of the rear frame match the curve of the body (see picture). Is this correct?
I think that the strips are stainless. I see that Anton used a jig to bend his. Any more tips to get a nice smooth curve?

Thanks, Ewan
