MG MG Y Type - Size differential oilseal?

On the 400 mile trip to Germany last weekend my only worry was a leaking rear-axle. It is caused by leakage from the differential nose.

Does any of you know the exact measurements for a modern replacement?

I have the same problem though it is minor. Moss makes an oil seal for the TC and it works. Looking at the TC and Y differential they appear to be the same design. Has anyone tried the Moss TC seal on a Y? No point in asking Moss because no one there knows anything about Ys. As I understand it the seal supplements the archimedes screw which was never perfect. Both the TC and Y used this method of sealing the differential pinion. Terry

About the only folk who carry the correct one are NTG I believe.

It is a standard seal and is identical to the millions fitted to the BMC mid-range saloon rear axles, ie Morris Oxford Farina, Austin Cambridge A50, A55. A60, Wolseley 15/50.15/60. 16/60, Riley 4/68.4/72, M.G. ZA, ZB, Mk3, Mk4, MGA, early MGB,Sherpa van with 1500 diesel engine, and so on and on. From a 'Farina' specialists it will cost you about £3, from a M.G. one about £9...

Thanks for your replies.

I always try to buy bearings and oilseals from a local (generic) supplier. There I can ask for the very best quality (SKF f.i.) and gladly pay THAT premium, instead of a specialists, or worse MG-, premium.

So my cynical view is that when I buy these items from (MG-) specialists, I know that I pay to much and I don't know which quality I get.

I'll remove the seal, get it measured and post the numbers that the oilsealvendor gives me.

Terry,
I installed the Moss seal on a TC and it works great.

I thought we were talking about a seal for the YA/T differential. The YB/TD differential is a different animal and I think that is what Neil is refering to, as the differentials in the cars he refers to are of a subsequent generation.
Perhaps the NTG seal is similar to the Moss TC seal, but I looked at it a long time ago and for some reason decided to pass.
The fact is that the oil drip from the differential on my YT is minor but at some point I may try the TC seal on for size. I also have a TC so I know it works. Terry

Terry, I talked about the YA/YT differential

I've finally wrestled free the really, REALLY tight nut on the pinion shaft and extracted the oil seal. It is cracked and hardened beyond belief so a new one is sorely needed. Alas the measurements don't match ordinary oil seals so an SOS-mail was sent to NTG.

In view of the coming trip to Switserland, I do hope they can help me, because the TD-etc item is probably different....

Just for the record, I've found a seal locally and it should arrive by post tomorrow.

The right measurements are:
Outer Diameter 2.5" or 63,5 mm
Shaft Diameter 1.375" or 34,9 mm
Thickness 0.1" or 12,7 mm

With these measurements in hand, the supplier was able to locate one, speed order and post it for the princely sum of EUR 7,77 or GBP 6.11 or USD 12.11.
